G.I.V.E. Yourself Away the Right Way

“The person who tries to preserve his life will lose it, but the person who loses his life for me will preserve it.” ~ Matthew 10:39

When we try to live only for our own pleasures, we are in a constant state of chasing after a state of fulfillment that we will never attain. However, when we give up our own pursuits and chase after the things God desires for us, we will find a life full of experiences that we never could have dreamed of.

Mohandas Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Unfortunately, though, people who do this with the wrong perspective, impure motives, or in an unhealthy manner end up damaging their own lives and the lives of those they are supposed to be serving. The foundation of service is love and if a person doesn’t love themselves first, they really don’t have the capacity to love others in a healthy way.

There is a way to serve others without hurting you or them in the process:

God-honoring - God cares more about your motives than your actions. Your desire for personal accolades and His expectation to get the credit don’t mix.

Intentional – Make sure who or what you’re investing your time, talents, and resources into is aligned with your purpose. Be strategic and focused so you and they can get the most out of what you’re doing.

Value-added – The best intentions don’t always relate to the best value. Quality counts over quantity.

Energizing – If you’re not excited by who or what you’re investing into, then either get excited or stop doing it. Otherwise, it’s a waste of your time. You can’t give yourself away begrudingly and expect anything significant to come from it.
