When Is Passion Dangerous? When You Don’t Control It!

Pursue your passions! This is a statement that you will hear from nearly all motivators, pastors, parents, teachers, advisers, mentors, and others preach to people almost daily, as if that’s the magic formula to lifelong happiness and success. Unfortunately, they don’t always tell you that “pursue your passions” is only part of the equation. As important as it is to pursue your passions, it’s equally important to make sure you steer your passions in the right direction.

If passion can be equated to a wild horse, purpose is the reins. Knowing your purpose provides direction and restraint for your passions. Purpose helps to control and contain your vigor and energy. Purpose channels your passions toward meaningful and fruitful ends. Purpose is the discipline that guides your zeal to produce profitable endeavors. Purpose ensures that you have the opportunity to maximize the potential of what your passions can accomplish.

Whether in business, relationships, or life in general, people run into all kinds of trouble when they don’t know how or aren’t able to channel their passions in a positive and profitable direction. G.I.V.E. Yourself Away the Right Way

“The person who tries to preserve his life will lose it, but the person who loses his life for me will preserve it.” ~ Matthew 10:39

When we try to live only for our own pleasures, we are in a constant state of chasing after a state of fulfillment that we will never attain. However, when we give up our own pursuits and chase after the things God desires for us, we will find a life full of experiences that we never could have dreamed of.

Mohandas Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Unfortunately, though, people who do this with the wrong perspective, impure motives, or in an unhealthy manner end up damaging their own lives and the lives of those they are supposed to be serving. The foundation of service is love and if a person doesn’t love themselves first, they really don’t have the capacity to love others in a healthy way.

There is a way to serve others without hurting you or them in the process:

God-honoring - God cares more about your motives than your actions. Your desire for personal accolades and His expectation to get the credit don’t mix.

Intentional – Make sure who or what you’re investing your time, talents, and resources into is aligned with your purpose. Be strategic and focused so you and they can get the most out of what you’re doing.

Value-added – The best intentions don’t always relate to the best value. Quality counts over quantity.

Energizing – If you’re not excited by who or what you’re investing into, then either get excited or stop doing it. Otherwise, it’s a waste of your time. You can’t give yourself away begrudingly and expect anything significant to come from it.

Mom Loses 2 Babies, Survives Cancer, Moves to Haiti

When I launched Passion in Action TV a few weeks ago, my goal was to highlight people who are impacting others’ lives by living their passion. The following story is a perfect example of two courageous people who have turned their tragedy into triumph and their pain into a passionate pursuit.

The last 4 years have been incredibly tumultuous for Adam and Kara Cole. She survived the rare cancer choriocarcinoma and lost 2 babies, the most recently only a few short months ago. Their response to their recent tragedy was not to crawl in a hole somewhere and marinate in their pain. Instead they decided to move to Haiti to help the post-earthquake recovery effort by investing in people who have experienced their own tragedies. Check out the CNN iReport video…

One’s life purpose is often discovered in the midst of great suffering. After watching the video and reading the story, it would be hard for me to conjure an acceptable excuse for why someone can’t find purpose in their pain that can be used for someone else’s good.

Get the B.I.G. Picture!

I purchased my first video camera earlier this year. Although I’m still an aspiring novice when it comes to videography, I’ve had a lot of fun learning the ins and outs of capturing inspiring moments on video. One elementary thing that I learned is that no matter how technologically advanced your camera is, if you are too close or too far away from your target, you will get a blurry picture. In order to bring the picture in proper focus, you have to adjust your distance and/or lens on the camera.

This is similar to the process of getting clarity for our lives. Clarity comes through understanding God’s B.I.G. (Bold, Innovative, God-Inspired) picture for us. What do I mean by that? Sometimes we make rash or impulsive decisions without having a good understanding of the short or long-term impact on other people and situations. Ask yourself the following questions:

Why am I alive?  What am I purposed to do? What is my vision of the future? Why do I do what I do? What goals have I developed for my life? Why did I choose those goals? What am I chasing and why? What will be my legacy?

If you can’t answer these questions confidently, I suggest you take some alone time with the One who created you and gave you purpose. Without God’s input, you can assume you’re making good decisions, but you could be missing some critical elements. His B.I.G. picture provides clarity for your direction and purpose in life by giving you a better perspective.

Find Your Best F.I.T.!

It’s often easy to assess our level of physical health. There’s plenty of tests we can take to provide us with information that will give us a good picture of our overall wellness. Likewise, we can analyze our bank accounts, cash flow, and debt levels to determine if we are financially fit.

However, when it comes to our professional pursuits, it’s a little harder to determine if our careers are healthy. Here’s a quick “F.I.T.ness“ test that may reveal if the things you are pursuing from a career or entrepreneurship standpoint are worth your time and investment:

F – Future focus: Do you career pursuits align with your life purpose? Are they getting you closer to accomplishing your short and long-term goals?

I – Intense interests: Will your career pursuits fully integrate and leverage your passions?

T – Top talents: Are your pursuits going to leverage what you do the best? Are these pursuits going to help you become the best at what you do?

Sometimes it’s easy to follow paths that seem great, because they have worked out for other people. However, that doesn’t automatically mean those paths are the right F.I.T. for you. Just because something is right for someone else, doesn’t make it right for you. Your best life path will F.I.T. you specifically.

Everything that looks good isn’t good for you. Make sure that everything into which you invest your time, talents, and treasures is purpose-driven, passion-pointed, and profitable!
