Jesus Was An Entrepreneur in the Healing Business

The new April/May issue of Brotha Online Magazine is ready and available for your exploration. My contribution to this edition is entitled, The Marketplace of Healing (I also have a special accompanying video, click here).

Jesus was in the healing business and regularly healed people in the marketplaces. Mark 6:56 is just one example. Here is a short excerpt from my article:

Do you believe God’s healing power is omnipresent? Do you believe people can be healed anywhere, including the workplace? Do you think someone could receive a miracle on your job? Do you believe God could use you to do that?
In the Old Testament, God dwelt in buildings, and visited people periodically. However, in the New Testament – which we are still living in now – God chooses to dwell in His people, and is ever-present. 2 Corinthians 6:16-17 tells us, “… for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
So as a living, breathing, moving Temple of the Holy Spirit, Almighty God is with you, even on your job or in your business. He delights in being close to you and wants to be involved in all aspects and details of your life. And since He is at work in you, He also wants to go to work with you! He sees the needs of the people you work with and wants to work through you to help them get a real breakthrough. Christ in you is the hope of glory!

Developing the Entrepreneurial Mind of Christ

It’s that time again! The new February/March issue of Brotha Online Magazine is ready and available for your exploration. My contribution to this edition is entitled, Developing the Entrepreneurial Mind of Christ. I also have a special accompanying video to go with this month’s article (click here). Here is a short excerpt from the article:

Albert Einstein was an intellectual phenomenon. Steve Jobs was a creative mastermind. Thomas Edison was a genius as bright as they come (pun intended). However none of these entrepreneurial inventors measures up to the brilliance, inventiveness, resourcefulness, prowess, and many other words I could use to describe our indescribable God.

God is the original and ultimate entrepreneur. In the beginning of Genesis 1, through Jesus (Hebrews 1:2), He created something incredible out of chaos. At the end of Genesis 1, they created man and woman in their divine image and told them to take dominion over the earth, be fruitful, and multiply. In order for us to accomplish these three mandates we have to use divine characteristics of entrepreneurship, including but not limited to faith, intelligence, creative ability, and resourcefulness, all of which God displayed as He manifested the universe.

When most people hear the word entrepreneur they automatically think about business and selling stuff. However, you don’t have to be in business to be entrepreneurial. My simple definition for entrepreneurial is the ability to create value for people using attributes given to us by God. So using this definition, everyone should be entrepreneurial, which also describes how we should be operating in the world with the mind of Christ.

Your Profession is Your Pulpit

Your Profession is Your Pulpit, my most recent Kingdom Business article written for Brotha Online Magazine is now ready for your reading pleasure. I focus on helping Christians understand the incredible opportunity they have in their current business or career to advance the Kingdom of God. You don’t need a church pulpit to make a great impact! Here’s a short excerpt:

Did you know that every Christian is in full-time ministry? Whether you realize it or not, if you are a Christian you a full-time minister in the Kingdom of God. You may not work for a church or have an official title of pastor, bishop, apostle, or evangelist, but you are indeed a minister of the Gospel. As an entrepreneur running your own business or an employee working for an organization, you have been given the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility of taking your personal ministry to the marketplace. The Apostle Paul who earned a living as a tent maker in addition to being a traveling evangelist, says it like this: “… And God has given us this task of reconciling people to Him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself, no longer counting their sins against them. And He gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:18-19).

The Last Shall Be First by Patrice Tsague

So he said to Him, “O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I’m the least in my father’s house. ~ Judges 6:15

by Patrice Tsague

Have you ever felt like the black sheep of your family? Are you surprised by the prophetic words that the Lord has spoken to you concerning His will for your life? Do you feel that your business is among the least in the industry?

I’m always amazed at the people God chooses to use for His purpose, he chooses those you would least expect. In Judges 6, Israel cries to the Lord for help because it is facing defeat in the hands of its enemy due to disobedience. God calls a least likely fellow, Gideon, who, by his own account, is from the weakest clan in Manasseh and the least within his family. However, God calls him “a mighty man of valor“.

Gideon defines his destiny based on where he was born and the family he was from, but God defines it based on His purpose for him. I, like Gideon, was the least likely to succeed in my family. I did not take school very seriously throughout my youth and I played more than I studied. Furthermore, I was raised by a woman who had an 8th grade education and whose first child was born out of wedlock, my father left her when I was a baby, and she became a second wife to a man who was already married. Very few people thought she would amount to anything. In spite of this, she became very successful in business and politics.

We were not a Christian family and my family supported a corrupt government. I even made a case against Christianity while in high school during a class debate because I saw Christians as hypocrites. To many people’s surprise, the Lord would save me, call me to preach the Gospel and start a ministry that teaches people how to do business based on His Word. Now I’m one of the “hypocrites” I once argued against. God has a sense of humor. In spite of all this He calls me “a mighty man of valor“!

You too are a “mighty man of valor“. If you have accepted God’s call to deploy your gifts, skills and abilities for His Glory, and to honor Him in the marketplace, you are God’s mighty man of valor. You are God’s warrior. Your background is insignificant, your circumstances irrelevant, and your smarts unnecessary because God will do it all, He just needs you to yield your members to His use.

God loves taking small, insignificant, least-likely-to-succeed individuals and businesses and turn them into success stories. This way, He and He alone will get the glory for the outcome.

Do you feel overwhelmed by the responsibilities before you but assured of your call? Are you certain of the direction but have limited resources? Are you intimidated by the competition but strong in your faith? Get ready because God is about to make the last first so that He can show you and others that He is God, and God all by Himself. He will elevate whom He chooses. Reflect on the passage below and give Him the Glory for He alone is great.

“For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence. But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God-and righteousness and sanctification and redemption-that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the LORD” (1 Corinthians 1:26-29).

Called to be in the Marketplace by Patrice Tsague

…Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid from now on you will catch men.” So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him. ~ Luke 5:10-11

by Patrice Tsague

Too often we as Christians have two lives: our church life, where we do our so called ministry and our secular life, where we earn our living. If we feel called to what we consider to be full-time ministry, the immediate assumption is that we are called to be the traditional pastor who must establish a local church or become a foreign missionary. Many have even left their businesses or professions in the marketplace because they believe that the only way to be in full-time ministry is to be a part of the local church staff or be involved in foreign missions. By doing this, some have found themselves outside of the will of God.

Ministry is bigger than the local church; ministry involves every aspect of our society. There are three basic institutions that God has established where ministry must be carried out: the local church, the family, and the marketplace. Among those institutions, the marketplace is the one where we spend most of our time with the majority of unsaved people. Marketplace ministry is carrying out our vocation as a calling, in the name of Christ, with the intent to fulfill the great commandment (Matthew 22:37-38) and the Great Commission. It challenges us to allow Jesus Christ to change us from fishermen to fishers of men.

Many of us who have accepted Christ are still acting as fishermen. We spend most of our time and energy in the marketplace toiling and worrying about how much fish we can catch, we do not realize that we are no longer fishermen but fishers of men. As fishers of men Jesus has already taken the responsibility to ensure that we catch enough fish to make our business profitable, our project successful, or that our campaign for office prevails.

Are you a fisherman or a fisher of men? Are you fulfilling the great commandment and the Great Commission through your business or profession?

I started my career as an entrepreneurship instructor, executive director and founder of a nonprofit youth organization. I was doing good works according to most standards; helping young people learn the skills of business so they could have an alternative to drugs, and providing leadership training to young, aspiring leaders. But in 1995, through a Christian businessman who was operating in his marketplace ministry, I received the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior. That led to a personal transformation where I received my marketplace call to use entrepreneurship as a tool to empower the body of Christ and seek and save the lost.

That revelation then led me to develop an entrepreneurship training program called Biblical Entrepreneurship and to restructure the organization my wife and I founded into a service ministry called Nehemiah Project International Ministry which helps people build kingdom businesses in partnership with churches, Christian organizations, and Christian colleges and universities. At that moment I went from being a fisherman to being a fisher of men. By the grace of God, the Lord has blessed us to assist thousands of individuals who are now operating profitable, sustainable and scalable kingdom businesses in the marketplace.

Your transition may not be as drastic; it may not even cause you to change what you are doing. You may only have to change how you are doing what you are already doing or your attitude towards it.

How to identify your marketplace call?

  1. Listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying to you.
  2. Identify your gifts, skills and abilities.
  3. What do you have a burden for?
  4. Where does your passion lie?
  5. How do you incorporate the great commandment and the Great Commission in the execution of your ministry

Remember there are very few industries and professions where we cannot serve the Lord for the scripture says, “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:17).

Never Give In by Patrice Tsague

For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity. ~ Proverbs 24:16

by Patrice Tsague

Are you overwhelmed by the demands of business? Has surrender come through your mind? Are you tempted to give up?

On October 29, 1941, U.K. Prime Minister Winston Churchill visited Harrow School to hear the traditional songs he had sung there as a youth, as well as to speak to the students. Many falsely believe that when he was invited to give a speech, Churchill stood before the students and said, Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, give up. Never give up. Never give up. Never give up” and afterward sat down.

That is not true, Churchill gave an entire speech that expressed the challenges that Britain had faced and its almost defeat. He also did not use the term “give up” but the term “give in”. After he gave an entire speech he concluded with these words,

“But for everyone, surely, what we have gone through in this period–I am addressing myself to the School–surely from this period of ten months, this is the lesson: Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never–in nothing, great or small, large or petty–never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.

We stood all alone a year ago, and to many countries it seemed that our account was closed, we were finished. All this tradition of ours, our songs, our School history, this part of the history of this country, were gone and finished and liquidated.

Very different is the mood today. Britain, other nations thought, had drawn a sponge across her slate. But instead our country stood in the gap. There was no flinching and no thought of giving in; and by what seemed almost a miracle to those outside these Islands, though we ourselves never doubted it, we now find ourselves in a position where I say that we can be sure that we have only to persevere to conquer

You sang here a verse of a School Song: you sang that extra verse written in my honor, which I was very greatly complimented by and which you have repeated today. But there is one word in it I want to alter – I wanted to do so last year, but I did not venture to. It is the line: “Not less we praise in darker days.”

I have obtained the Head Master’s permission to alter darker to sterner. “Not less we praise in sterner days.”

Do not let us speak of darker days: let us speak rather of sterner days. These are not dark days; these are great days–the greatest days our country has ever lived; and we must all thank God that we have been allowed, each of us according to our stations, to play a part in making these days memorable in the history of our race”. [Source: http://www.school-for-champions.com]

God will use what He is taking you through to shape history and impact the marketplace. So do not be discouraged nor dismayed, but faithfully work and allow him to take you to the end so He may be glorified through your life.

For those of you who have taken Principles of Biblical Entrepreneurship (BE I), you will know that since 1997 my conclusive statement has been “never give up, never give up, never ever ever ever ever give up”. Whether a problem is your fault or not, no matter how great the error or the sin, never give up. Sure you may change businesses, you may go through failure, but never give up. To give up is to allow the trial of the journey to cause you to resign from pursuing God’s plan for your life; it is to fall down on the canvas and refuse to get back up. It is to completely surrender. Do not give the enemy any satisfaction but fight to the end because, as you are well aware, in the end we win because our Lord has already conquered the enemy.

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:37-39).

6 More Ideas for Your Church to Economically Empower Your Congregation and Community

Last week I wrote a post “7 Great Ideas for Your Church to Economically Empower Your Congregation and Community” The key thing to remember about all these ideas is that the pastor doesn’t have to do them all or lead every effort. It’s time to strategically engage the businesspeople and professionals in your church who would be more than happy to share their expertise with their fellow church members and the community.

Here are 6 more ideas…

  1. Conduct job search/career development workshops facilitated by HR experts from the church
  2. Connect with multiple churches to host a job fair
  3. Develop a listing of members with their trade/skill and publish a directory
  4. Generate revenue for a career services program by selling ads to the business owners (see #3)
  5. Faith-based business workshops
  6. Invite speakers from local jobs-related programs

What has your church done to help to economically empower your congregation and community?

If you weren’t aware 3hrive Marketplace Ministry provides these types of services for churches. 3hrive Marketplace Ministry equips Christian catalysts to find and fulfill their calling in the marketplace as an employee or entrepreneur, using practical tools built on biblical principles. We work with individuals, churches, and community groups to facilitate workshops and programs that inspire and equip people to activate their gifts, find their niche, and build God’s Kingdom through business and community-based ventures. 7 Great Ideas for Your Church to Economically Empower Your Congregation and Community

A few weeks ago I posted an article Has the Church Done Enough to Respond to the Recession? This was partly inspired by my own perceived notions and research by Barna Group, which reveals the church is falling short in in terms of providing proactive support to the economic crisis for their members or communities. Some of this is due to the financial pain churches are feeling. Some of it in my opinion is that pastors and church leaders may not be aware of many of the practical things they can do – separate from just giving money – to those who are hurting financially.

When I posted that question on LinkedIn and 48Days.net forums I got some great feedback. Here are a few ideas your church can use to provide assistance and direction to your congregation and communities who are experiencing some severe economic pains…

  1. Host Financial Peace classes
  2. 1-on-1 financial counseling for families
  3. 1-on-1 business coaching for entrepreneurs
  4. Monthly e-newsletter from the church with financial tips
  5. Marketplace-themed messages
  6. Host a budgeting workshop
  7. Create space for a barter system/network for goods and services
