A Few Thoughts on Whitney Houston and the Grammys

Most of the world knows by now that Whitney Houston passed away on Saturday. The outpouring of sympathy and sentiments has been what is expected for who may have been the greatest singer of all time. She was given a wonderful tribute last night at the Grammys. And in countless news stories, interviews, and programs people are expressing shock, dismay, sadness, and a multitude if other feelings.

This is an extremely sad story of a wonderful talent who met with a tragic end to her life. However, the question has to be asked: Why do people seem to respond differently when a superstar dies unexpectedly than when a “regular” person dies unexpectedly?

One reason I believe this mindset exists is because secretly in the hearts of “regular” people lives the same distorted perspective that lives in the heart of many superstars. It’s the human tendency – and for many a conscious choice – to chase the dream vs. The Dream Giver (God).

I can’t say this is what happened to Whitney Houston, but this is what happens to a lot of people in our society. Actually this mindset is nothing new. It was actually addressed by God in Deuteronomy 8 when He admonished the nation of Israel before they entered their promise land. He told them that life was about to get really good. And when it did, they had better not forget the One who made it happen, or else it would cause them to lose everything.

Why is it so important that you don’t pursue your dream at the exclusion of the Dream Giver? When seasons of attention, fame, and stardom pass, and it seems like your dream is now fading from memory instead of flowing into your future, what will you have to hold on to? Whether you are in front of big crowds or not, when the Dream Giver is your focus, you will have the foundation, inspiration, and direction for the next adventure of your life. Transitions don’t have to be tragic, they can be triumphant.

In today’s cult of celebrity, as exhibited by the Grammys and other award shows, people are worshipped for their talent and exploits as much as if not more than God. When that happens, celebrities are ascribed glory that should only be given to God. In Hebrew the word “glory” originally means “weight” or “heaviness.” Humans were not created to carry the weight of God’s glory, only to reflect it. When the weight and pressure of carrying the glory of man-made fame, i.e. having to keep pleasing people or shocking them so you stay relevant in their minds and wallets year after year, people eventually crack under the pressure. They end up doing things they felt was necessary to temporarily or permanently escape the pressure of their lives.

No matter how we have idolized them, superstars – like all of us – are frail human beings who eventually will break down if enough pressure is applied. The list is staggering of those who “died too soon” over the last couple of years (or even the last 40 years) under tragic circumstances that involved drugs and/or alcohol:

  • Michael Jackson
  • Heath Ledger
  • Amy Winehouse
  • Jimi Hendrix
  • Elvis Presley
  • Marilyn Monroe
  • Chris Farley
  • Janis Joplin
  • Judy Garland
  • Many more…

And sadly we must now add Whitney Houston to that list. We may never fully know the circumstances of her death, but we have heard by her own admission some of the struggles of the last few years of her life. I pray that we all learn from these individuals and ask God to give us a new mindset for the proper way to appreciate our own and others’ talents, achievements, and accomplishments.

James 1:17 tells us that every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of Lights. He loves to bless His children with amazing talent that blesses the world. What He doesn’t love is when His children worship the talent – their own or someone else’s – more than they worship Him.

So let me ask you, are you chasing the dream or the Dream Giver?

Are You Pursuing Provision at the Expense of Your Purpose?

Most Christians struggle between pursuing purpose vs. pursuing provision. Are you toiling when you should be resting? God gives spiritual and emotional rest to His children (Psalm 127:2). Using a beautiful backdrop in Miami I discuss how to find purpose and provision through God’s peace.

When Is Passion Dangerous? When You Don’t Control It!

A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls. ~ Proverbs 25:28

Pursue your passions! This is a statement that you will hear from nearly all motivators, pastors, parents, teachers, advisers, mentors, and others preach to people almost daily, as if that’s the magic formula to lifelong happiness and success. Unfortunately, they don’t always tell you that “pursue your passions” is only part of the equation. As important as it is to pursue your passions, it’s equally important to make sure you steer your passions in the right direction.

If passion can be equated to a wild horse, purpose is the reins. Knowing your purpose provides direction and restraint for your passions. Purpose helps to control and contain your vigor and energy. Purpose channels your passions toward meaningful and fruitful ends. Purpose is the discipline that guides your zeal to produce profitable endeavors. Purpose ensures that you have the opportunity to maximize the potential of what your passions can accomplish.

Whether in business, relationships, or life in general, people run into all kinds of trouble when they don’t know how or aren’t able to channel their passions in a positive and profitable direction. These people are like swamps. One big difference between a river and a swamp is that the river has boundaries, which keeps the water flowing as a powerful force. The swamp’s lack of boundaries allows its water to overflow its banks, become stagnant, and emit a foul stench. People love rivers, but very few actually enjoy being near a swamp.

In the last few years, it’s easy to see that we have had many “swamp creatures” appear in boardrooms, pulpits, the public square, and society overall. They allowed their passions to run rampant, ruining their reputations and causing major collateral damage.

When it comes to your passions, don’t be like a swamp. Instead be like a river that’s purposeful, powerful, and profitable!

How do you channel your passions in the most profitable direction?

Find Work You Love To Do Not Just Work You Can Do

“Very often a change of self is needed more than a change of scene.” ~Arthur C. Benson

In one of my recent posts, RePurpose Your Occupation, I described the difference between vocation (calling) and occupation (job), and how the two don’t align for most people. I believe many people are unhappy in their current job/career because they don’t see the connection between that and doing something they would find more significant and meaningful. People who work on purpose have greater long-term fulfillment and productivity than those who don’t.

This type of transition may seem daunting, especially if you sense that your vocation may be a 180 degree difference than your current occupation. Fortunately it doesn’t always involve an external move. Sometimes it’s an internal shift of your perspective and priorities. You might be able to stay in the same career or company and just what you’re doing or how you’re doing it.

If you are trying to figure how to begin the process to transition from a job to your life calling, here’s a few questions to get you started:

  1. Are you excited to wake up and go to work everyday?
  2. Do you find a deep sense of meaning and fulfillment in the work that you do?
  3. Would you be willing to do your current job at another company or working for yourself?
  4. Are you able to fully engage your talents and abilities in daily work?
  5. Do you foresee yourself doing what you’re doing for the next 20 years and enjoying it?

For those of you who are ready to jump ship and move to more purposeful work today, pause that thought for a second. One to understand is that working with excellence in your job now are creates opportunities for you to work in your vocation in the future.

Have you been able to find an occupation that closely aligns with your purpose? How did you do it? Looking forward to your comments.

RePurpose Your Occupation to a Vocation

Did you know that job satisfaction in the United States is at a 22-year low? I believe one reason is that too many people have tried to fit their vocation into their occupation. What do I mean by that?

The origin of the word vocation is “spiritual calling” (I would venture to say that most people don’t feel very “spiritual” about their 9 to 5). Your true vocation is linked to your life purpose. Unfortunately, not enough people understand their life purpose or do what’s necessary to transition to a career that reflects it.

With a deeper understanding of the word vocation, recognize that it is much broader than just your occupation. In a perfect world of course your occupation would be your vocation, but for most people that’s not the case. Many in the workforce are frustrated because they have a deep yet unfulfilled desire to do work they believe exemplifies and flows from their life purpose. Unfortunately, they don’t know how to make that a reality.

If you’re looking for a way to transition from your occupation to your vocation, I will provide a few clues in one my next posts.

Have you been able to find an occupation that closely aligns with your purpose? How did you do it? Looking forward to your comments.

What Does Dreaming B.I.G. Mean to You?

What does Dreaming B.I.G. mean to you?

As I mentioned in a previous post, this month is the one year anniversary of the release of my first book, “Dream B.I.G in 3D!” This past year I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in promoting the book and the message of living out purpose-focused dreams. One of my challenges is getting people to see the difference between dreaming big and dreaming “B.I.G.“, i.e. Bold, Innovative, and God-Inspired.

Dreaming “B.I.G.” means that your are living purposefully, passionately, and prosperously – doing exactly what God created you to do and loving every minute of it. The focus is on increasing the size of your significance (positive influence) instead of focusing on the significance of the size of the things you have. The ultimate outcome of your manifested dream is that you live and leave a powerful legacy that impacts multiple generations. So are you  really dreaming “B.I.G.“?

One Year Anniversary for Dream B.I.G. in 3D!

Wow! It’s hard to believe it’s been one year since the launch of a movement, i.e. the release of my first book, “Dream B.I.G. in 3D: How to Pursue a Bold, Innovative, God-Inspired Life!” Many lives have been positively impacted as they shifted from dreaming to living on purpose.

We had a lot of fun at our 3 “Books & Biscotti” book release events, produced by my incredible publisher Paramind Publications. We had some incredible performers that did an amazing job personifying and amplifying the Dream B.I.G. message. Check out the event videos…
