Compete vs Complete by Patrice Tsague

“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.” ~ 1 Corinthians 3:6

by Patrice Tsague

How competitive are you? Do you know how to compete in the kingdom? Do you understand that being a part of the kingdom is about completing others rather than competing with others? ”I’m of Paul and another says I’m of Apollos” was the debate that went on among the Corinthians as they argued over who was their favorite apostle. I can imagine the debates, “Which apostle is more eloquent, who hears from God the best, who is the best teacher and of course who has the greatest anointing?” To that argument the Apostle Paul responds, “This attitude is carnal and not of God. None of us is more important than the other. Our focus should be to complete each other rather than compete with each other. God will reward each of us individually, according to each person’s labor and there is enough to go around.

Without question there is competition in the marketplace, not just between profit making enterprises but also in the not for profit sector, including churches. Our economic policy even encourages competition so there cannot be a monopoly, which is bad for consumers. Our anti-monopoly laws are designed to ensure that one company cannot have complete control over one sector of the market and charge whatever price it wants for its products, because customers would have no choice but to buy from that company. In a monopoly, customers would have to settle for mediocre products and services. Although the concept of competition has been abused and many have employed unethical and even sometimes illegal practices to top the competition or gain market dominance, competition can be a good thing. There are several benefits to competition:

  1. It gives customers a choice.
  2. It helps us do our best.
  3. It challenges our faith.
  4. It provides better prices for the customer.
  5. It removes those who are not called from the marketplace.

With so many benefits of competition, the problem is not with competition but with the attitude of those of us who are competing. Within a competitive environment we must cultivate an attitude of completion rather than competition. A person with a competitive attitude believes that there is not enough to go around and views the opponent as an enemy who must be brought down. While someone with a spirit of completion believes there is more than enough and sees the opponent as a fellow comrade in service of customers or a potential soul to be won for Christ.

What are the key differences between someone with a competitive spirit and someone with a spirit of completion?

How do you deal with competitors who do not share your values and who employ ungodly methods to harm you? Remember the words of Jesus, “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you” (Matthew 5:44).

Are you competitive or are you a completer? Seek God’s wisdom today on how to be a completer in the market place for the advancement of the kingdom of God on the earth.

The Unemployed Need New (Entrepreneurial) Alternatives

In the past few weeks the U.S. government has seemed to have taken its eyes off the unemployment plight of millions as it focuses more on the federal budget and national debt ceiling. While their attention has seemingly been drawn away during this time, the economy gained 75% fewer jobs between April and May.

I really don’t think the “experts” in the government or the private sector have a clue as to what to do to get the economy going again. I believe this problem is spiritual in nature that has produced the bad economic fruit that we’re eating right now; which means it will take divine intervention to get us out of this hole. God wants to get reintegrated as a priority back into the financial and economic affairs of this country, and not just as an afterthought to pray to Him to get us out of this mess.

There is an alternative to get people “working” again that addresses the spiritual and economic needs of people. It’s called S.E.E.D.S. for HOPE which provides biblically-based entrepreneurship training. More money, time, and energy needs to be invested into helping people build small and micro-businesses through entrepreneurship training, but it must be done in a way that honors God and not the “almighty” dollar. I believe innovative ideas, new markets, and financial opportunities will open up for Christian entrepreneurs when we reposition God on the throne of our lives and businesses.

Power of Prayer for Entrepreneurs by Patrice Tsague

“Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.  The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” ~ James 5:16

by Patrice Tsague

Have you faced situations in your business that money and intellect could not resolve? Do you understand the power of prayer? Have you had your back against the wall?

Entrepreneurs are known for taking great risks or for facing situations that seem impossible. In those cases, many entrepreneurs tend to worry or make the situation worse by taking matters into their own hands. As Biblical Entrepreneurs we have no greater weapon than the power of prayer. Prayer is an open communication with God that demonstrates our vulnerability and our complete dependence upon Him. It is a complete submission to His will for our lives. When we are faced with impossible situations prayer is often the only weapon that is cost-effective, accessible and works every time. There are many examples in scripture of individuals who demonstrated their dependence upon God through prayer.

Solomon, faced with succeeding his father as the third king of Israel, felt inadequate to handle the new responsibility. So, Solomon turned to prayer. God came through and made him the wisest and richest man who ever lived.

“Now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted. Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?” I Kings 3:79

Moses, while leading the children of Israel out of Egypt, was being chased by the most powerful army of his time. He took a direction that led him to a dead end, with Pharaoh’s army at his back and the Red sea in front of him, Moses prayed to God. God gave Moses instructions that parted the red sea and enabled the Israelites to cross on dry land, while Pharaoh’s army drowned.

“And the LORD said to Moses, “Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward. But lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it. And the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.” Exodus 14:15-16

Jesus, after ministering to a multitude of people, realized that He could not let them go away hungry. He inquired about feeding them but soon discovered that there was not enough food to go around. He turned to the Father and prayed for provision. God multiplied the food and Jesus was able to feed about 5,000 men, women and children, with food left over.

“And they said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.” He said, “Bring them here to Me.” Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes. So they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained. Now those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.” Matthew 14:17-21

What business situations are you facing today? Is it a cash flow shortage, issues with staff, government issues, or customer problems? No matter the problem, you can turn to God in prayer and He will give you the wisdom to address it and turn what seems to be an impossible situation possible.

The Christian Patriot by Patrice Tsague

“Brethren, my heart desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved.” ~ Romans 10:1

by Patrice Tsague

What is your view of patriotism? Do you consider yourself a patriot? Do you pray for your country?

No one should be a greater patriot of his or her nation of residence than the Biblical Entrepreneur, since one of the objectives of business is to bring transformation to the community and the nation. The Biblical Entrepreneur is the engine of God’s economy; he is the provider of goods and services, the job creator, taxpayer, tither, philanthropist, and the shaper of values. The Biblical Entrepreneur is a patriot. However, the challenge with patriotism is that some, out of a lack of understanding or due to the historical problems of their nation, reject the notion of being a patriot. On the other hand, others, out of regard for the great history of their nation of residence, put their love for the nation above their love for the kingdom. In some cases there is just a complete misunderstanding of how to be a patriot for one’s country of birth or residence without compromising allegiance to the Kingdom.

A patriot is one who loves, supports and defends his nation. A Christian patriot is a citizen of heaven who is committed to bringing the kingdom of God to earth, beginning with the country where he resides in, out of a sincere love for that country and his commitment to the kingdom mandate.

The Apostle Paul was a Christian patriot; he recognized that his citizenship was not of this world yet his commitment to bringing the kingdom of God to Israel and the Gentiles was unparalleled. His love for these nations was out of his response to the mandate he received from his Commander in Chief and his sincere love for those nations. He never compromised kingdom values in his efforts to demonstrate his love and support for Israel. He recognized that the best way to show love to Israel was to show Israel the way of the kingdom. Although he was proud of Israel’s achievements, he recognized its limitations and errors. And although he recognized Israel’s limitations and errors, he still celebrated its achievements and God’s favor upon the nation.

Unfortunately, some Christians lack the proper understanding of a balanced view of patriotism. As a result, they either put their love for their country of residence above their commitment to the kingdom or think their commitment to the kingdom demands that they reject their country of residence. Fortunately, it is not an “either or” proposition since Christian patriots are called to demonstrate their commitment to the Kingdom by their love for their countries.

How do you exemplify Christian patriotism?

  1. Develop a kingdom worldview, Matthew 6:33
  2. Understand the kingdom mandate, Mathew 28:18-20
  3. Pray for the country and its leaders, Romans 10:1, Jeremiah 29:7
  4. Celebrate the achievements of the country, Acts 13:16-32, Romans 10:2
  5. Confront the unrighteousness of the country, Romans 10:3
  6. Enjoy the blessings and privileges of the country, Jeremiah 29:4-7
  7. When given the opportunity, share the good news, Romans 10:9-11

Christian patriotism is not easy but it is necessary if we are to achieve the mandate of Christ in any nation. For those of us who reside in a nation where there is a historical commitment to Judeo-Christian principles, we must remember never to make the mistake that the Jews made in the time of Jesus; they valued their traditions and achievements more than the God who gave them the tradition and achievements. For those who reside in a nation where there has been historical injustice, we must remember not to be so angered by the injustice that we forget how God has worked throughout the history of that country. As Christian patriots we are called to be grateful while demonstrating the love of Christ.

Where is your country of residence? Have you been a Christian patriot where you reside? Pray that God may show you ways to demonstrate His love for that nation without compromising kingdom principles though your business.

Scarcity vs Abundance by Patrice Tsague

“Then His disciples said to Him, “Where could we get enough bread in the wilderness to fill such a great multitude?” ~ Matthew 15:33

by Patrice Tsague

Do you believe there are enough opportunities and resources to go around?  Do you fear that the success of your competitor will limit your success?

I am always amazed at the fact that even the most mature Christian operates based on the mindset of scarcity. Scarcity is a belief that there is insufficient supply of resources and opportunities to go around, while abundance is the belief that there is enough. Some believe that the pie gets bigger based on our faith, creativity and innovation while others believe that the pie is restricted to the size that we can see before us, so we must all hurry up and get our share before it runs out. What do you believe?

In Matthew 15, Jesus has just finished healing the multitude. Recognizing that they are hungry, He called on His disciples to find food for them to eat. His disciples are surprised by His request because they are in the wilderness and do not see provision anywhere in sight.  Jesus asks, “How many loaves do you have?”  They respond, “Seven, and a few little fish.” Notice that they had something but did not think it was enough. Jesus commands the multitude to sit down on the ground. He takes the bread, blesses it, and feeds over four thousand people, including men, women and children, with seven baskets of food left over. This story is found in various versions throughout the Gospels.

Jesus never saw a limitation of resources no matter the circumstances. Rather, He trusted the full provision of God the Father in every situation, while the disciples operated based on what they could see and did not tap into God’s abundant provision. What is the difference between an abundance mindset and a scarcity mindset?

Abundance mindset                Scarcity mindset

Trust God’s ability to provide     Trust in your own ability

Walk by faith                                 Walk by sight

Hopeful and optimistic               Full of fear and doubt

Share and give                              Hoard

Walk in contentment                  Never satisfied

Steward mentality                        Ownership mentality

Complete others                            Competitive

Exemplify fruit of the Spirit       Exemplify works of the flesh

Where do you fall? How do you react to feeling squeezed by the daily demands of life upon the resources you steward? Abundant thinking is not easy because the news media and our friends and family remind us daily of what we do not have and what we need. We are constantly comparing ourselves with our neighbors, which at times makes us feel even worse about what we think we do not have.  However, the benefits of the abundance mindset is that we walk in peace, God-fidence, gratefulness and are able to be a blessing to others. Take whatever resources you feel may be limited and begin to bless and thank God for them. Ask Him to open your eyes to see the abundance so you may walk in His complete provision for your life and business.

“My Father’s Business: Taking Ministry to the Marketplace” Workshop – March 19

Surveys reveal that most Christians feel they are not being trained for their calling in the workplace through the local church. Further, many Christians are frustrated because they don’t see a fit for their gifts in traditional ministry settings. Unfortunately, they don’t realize they are called and anointed to minister in the marketplace. Others recognize their marketplace calling, but don’t know how to fully walk in the authority of their calling outside the church.

The Last Shall Be First by Patrice Tsague

So he said to Him, “O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I’m the least in my father’s house. ~ Judges 6:15

by Patrice Tsague

Have you ever felt like the black sheep of your family? Are you surprised by the prophetic words that the Lord has spoken to you concerning His will for your life? Do you feel that your business is among the least in the industry?

I’m always amazed at the people God chooses to use for His purpose, he chooses those you would least expect. In Judges 6, Israel cries to the Lord for help because it is facing defeat in the hands of its enemy due to disobedience. God calls a least likely fellow, Gideon, who, by his own account, is from the weakest clan in Manasseh and the least within his family. However, God calls him “a mighty man of valor“.

Gideon defines his destiny based on where he was born and the family he was from, but God defines it based on His purpose for him. I, like Gideon, was the least likely to succeed in my family. I did not take school very seriously throughout my youth and I played more than I studied. Furthermore, I was raised by a woman who had an 8th grade education and whose first child was born out of wedlock, my father left her when I was a baby, and she became a second wife to a man who was already married. Very few people thought she would amount to anything. In spite of this, she became very successful in business and politics.

We were not a Christian family and my family supported a corrupt government. I even made a case against Christianity while in high school during a class debate because I saw Christians as hypocrites. To many people’s surprise, the Lord would save me, call me to preach the Gospel and start a ministry that teaches people how to do business based on His Word. Now I’m one of the “hypocrites” I once argued against. God has a sense of humor. In spite of all this He calls me “a mighty man of valor“!

You too are a “mighty man of valor“. If you have accepted God’s call to deploy your gifts, skills and abilities for His Glory, and to honor Him in the marketplace, you are God’s mighty man of valor. You are God’s warrior. Your background is insignificant, your circumstances irrelevant, and your smarts unnecessary because God will do it all, He just needs you to yield your members to His use.

God loves taking small, insignificant, least-likely-to-succeed individuals and businesses and turn them into success stories. This way, He and He alone will get the glory for the outcome.

Do you feel overwhelmed by the responsibilities before you but assured of your call? Are you certain of the direction but have limited resources? Are you intimidated by the competition but strong in your faith? Get ready because God is about to make the last first so that He can show you and others that He is God, and God all by Himself. He will elevate whom He chooses. Reflect on the passage below and give Him the Glory for He alone is great.

“For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence. But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God-and righteousness and sanctification and redemption-that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the LORD” (1 Corinthians 1:26-29).

The Exponential Power of Cooperative Ambition

“One can chase a thousand and two can put ten thousand to flight.” ~ Deuteronomy 32:30

I feel very inspired right now. Earlier today I led the first session of a marketplace Bible study for some incredible leaders and entrepreneurs. The long-term potential of this group is even greater than I realized when God first gave me the idea to do it. Here are a few of my thoughts now that the first meeting is over…

Two (or more) minds are often better than just one. Achieving your dreams for you is uplifting, encouraging, and inspirational. However, partnering with others to achieve something unthinkable becomes legendary. As great as your ideas may be, they have the potential to be even much more robust and effective when you are able to combine them with other’s ideas. That’s innovation that makes a difference!

There are enough businesses out there for you to compete with each other. You need to find some entrepreneurs with whom you can complete each other. I call that coopetition.

I love this quote by Napoleon Hill…

“When TWO or MORE people coordinate in a spirit of HARMONY and work toward a definite OBJECTIVE or PURPOSE, they place themselves in position, through the alliance, to absorb POWER directly from the Great Storehouse of INFINITE INTELLIGENCE.”

Whether you call it a mastermind group, board of directors, dream team, or something else, there is great power in joining with other great thinkers in the pursuit of something far greater than what you could conquer on your own. “Lone Rangers” will eventually be strangers to success.

If you desire to maximize the potential of your time, talents and ideas, find some people with whom you can cooperatively pursue significant opportunities. Exponential results are awaiting your business!

Thrive on purpose,

Paul Wilson, Jr.
