I have a one year old son and I just love watching him grow and mature, exploring his way through his new world. One thing that amazes me is how fearless he is. Even before he was walking he was climbing on top of things that he probably shouldn’t have been. I would catch him scaling boxes and furniture that were high enough for him to fall and get hurt. It  seemed like he would purposefully crawl to the edge of the bed and then start bouncing up and down like he was Tigger from Winnie the Pooh.

Even now, he rarely goes after what’s easiest. I watch him with amazement as he calculates his maneuvers to reach for things that are the furthest away, highest up, or most difficult to grab. However, unlike his mother and I, he doesn’t have any concerns related to his well-being. He has no sense of danger, probably because he lacks the knowledge or experience that he should be concerned about what he is doing.

Dangerous or not, the reality is that he was born with innate adventurous desires. There is something inside of him that compels him to go for it – whatever it happens to be at that time.

Of course I then have to question myself: If I was born with the same innate sense of adventure and exploration, has that been suppressed or ignored in any way? Do I approach new experiences and endeavors with fearlessness, awe, and a sense of wonder? Or am I always looking for the safety net before I attempt to grasp the seemingly unreachable? When I don’t have all the information/answers up front, am I still willing to take a “calculated” risk in my relationships, business, or personal development?

I had to admit to myself that in some areas – even as one who takes risks as an entrepreneur – I’m either not as fearless as I used to be or I’m not as fearless as I ultimately want to be.

What about you? Are you fearless in every area of your life? Are you willing to stretch beyond your comfort level for a new experience or adventure that will challenge and grow you? Think about the areas in your life where you are not fearless and what you need to do to change.

Your adventures don’t have to end after childhood. Remember, the fruit is at the end of the branch. Fearlessly take the risk to climb out there and get it!
