Tony Dungy: Quiet Thriver

“Super Thrive Week” Series

On January 12, 2009, a quiet rumble was felt in the sports world. Almost as low-key as his personality, coach Tony Dungy graciously retired after seven incredibly successful seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.

Dungy accomplished so much during his tenure with the Colts including, becoming the first black head coach in NFL history to win a Super Bowl and having a greater than 75% winning percentage. He also set league records for most consecutive playoff seasons (10) and consecutive 12-win seasons (six), and leaves with the highest average of regular-season victories of any coach in league history (10.7) (Source:

What’s even greater than these accomplishments is the impact that he had on tens of thousands – maybe millions – of people off the football field. We learned more about his character as a man after his son died in 2005 than we ever knew watching him coach a game.

Although he’s still one of the best coaches in the NFL, he recognizes that coaching football is only a part of what he does, not the totality of who he is. He understands that his life has a greater purpose than his profession and that it’s time to transition to a new phase. Here is a quote from him during one of his interviews:

“I want to do something more with my family and something that would connect more with my goals,” he said. “Where my heart is, is really with our young men right now. We have so many guys that didn’t grow up like me, didn’t have their dad there and that’s something I’m very, very interested in.” (read full article here.)

I am excited to see the impact that he will have on people – especially young men – in the next phase of his life. Hopefully people will have the same or even greater level of appreciation for his work now that he’s gone from the game of football and is taking on an even greater coaching role in the game life. God bless you, Tony.
