Thriving Perseverance

“Super Thrive Week” Series

Typically in sports (and life) athletes want to be known for their greatest successes, especially if it’s something they have worked long and hard to achieve. However, what people are often most inspired by is the manner in which they overcome their greatest struggles.

This was not more true than when the world watched with awe and admiration a sprinter named Derek Redmond at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. The image of him, with the help of his father, forcing his way to the finish line after he tore his hamstring still brings water to my eyes. In those captivating moments, the perception of Redmond’s failure to win that race was transformed into an unforgettable image of perseverance that will be emblazoned in people’s minds as they think about the all-time most memorable moments in Olympic history.

Derek Redmond is a perfect representation of my definition of perseverance:  the willingness to fight through painful experiences and incredible obstacles to accomplish a goal. Redmond, now a motivational speaker, says this about overcoming obstacles:

“No matter how meticulous the preparation, how dedicated the team and the individual, life has a habit of delivering the unexpected. When that happens it is vital to stay focused, adjust objectives and goals as necessary and maintain the drive for success.”

Unfortunately, in our society perseverance is often an uncommon commodity in short supply. So many people want to take shortcuts to success. They want get-rich-quick schemes without enduring the difficulties and developing the strong work ethic required for long-term significance.

No one who has achieved greatness was able to take a short-cut around perseverance. If you desire to thrive in life, don’t fear struggles and challenges – embrace them. They are a necessary part of the qualifying process for your future success.
