Bricks, Wall, or Cathedral?

Seeing all the destruction of crumbled buildings in Haiti over the past week has many people asking the question, how do you rebuild the infrastructure?” A more important question is how do you rebuild a life?that seemingly is nothing but a pile rubble. For a building it’s a somewhat simple process to clear away broken concrete and twisted metal and start the construction process. It’s a lot more complicated to clear away an individual’s or nation’s mental and emotional debris and start again.

Here’s an interesting story…

A traveller comes upon three stonemasons. He asks each in turn: ‘What are you doing?’ The first answers, without hesitation, ‘I am cutting this stone.’ The second, who appears to be doing the identical job makes a gesture with his hand and says; ‘I am completing the wall.’ The third, again seems to be doing the same job slowly raises his eyes to the sky and says; ‘I am building a cathedral.’

When I think about various cathedrals around the world, I am impacted by their architectural beauty, ingenious design, amazing longevity, and spiritual significance. How does this relate to your life? A “cathedral life” is one that is faith-filled, flourishing, fruitful, fun, and fulfilled. Every life – no matter how broken, twisted, or flawed – has the potential to be a cathedral, even yours.

Your everyday experiences – good and bad – are like the bricks of your cathedral. Every brick has a purpose. As mundane or difficult or painful as they may seem, accumulated they serve a significant purpose in the grand scheme of your life.

Don’t get discouraged thinking that you’re just laying bricks. You’re building something spectacular!
