Idol Dreams vs Idle Dreams – Part 1

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when dreams come true there is life and joy.” ~ Proverbs 13:12

I believe God gives us dreams to provide context for our past, put our present in perspective, and propel us forward with inspiration and insight into our future. Dreams have the power to move the hearts of people to accomplish great feats. On the other hand, they also have the power to consume a person when they don’t have a healthy perspective of their dreams and the role they are designed to play in their lives.

Detriments of Idle Dreams

One way that our dreams can become a detriment is if we are idle and do nothing with them. Often times the challenges of life can cause us to lose focus and interest in our dreams when we become overwhelmed with real and perceived urgent issues. And when a person begins to lose interest in their dreams, they begin to lose hope in their future.

Another thing that can happen is when a person is intimidated by the size of their dreams. They have an incredible vision, but they don’t immediately see the resources or means for getting it done, so they give up before they even begin. In essence, they don’t believe that it’s possible to bring their dreams into reality.

Here are a few reminders if you are tempted to sit on your assets and do nothing with your dreams…

  • The days of your life on this earth are numbered. Don’t procrastinate until tomorrow what you should be doing today, because tomorrow is the day that never arrives.
  • Don’t waste your time, talents, and treasures doing nothing with the dreams and desires that you have been given. God is expecting a return on His investment in you.
  • Your talents are a gift to be used to execute your dreams. Like a muscle, if you don’t use them they will atrophy and become ineffective.
  • Don’t allow the size of your dream to intimidate you. The pain of regret is greater than the pain of failure. Do something!
  • You don’t have to see the entire picture to begin to take action. Start where you are with the resources and relationships that you already have access to.
  • Trust God that if He gave you the vision, He will also give you the provision for making it happen.
  • Your God-inspired dream is bigger than you… it will launch someone else into their destiny.
  • It’s never too late to start dreaming again. It’s never too late to start living your dream.

One way that our dreams can become not only detrimental, but dangerous is if we develop idols out of our dreams, i.e. we begin to love the gift of the dream more than the Giver of the dream. I’ll discuss that in Part 2 tomorrow.

It’s unproductive and unprofitable to have either idle or idol dreams. To learn more about how I can help you activate your dreams and keep them in the proper perspective, join me at the Dream B.I.G. in 3D Live! Workshop on Saturday, April 17 in Marietta, GA. Click here to learn more.
