Seek First the Kingdom by Patrice Tsague

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
~ Matthew 6:33

by Patrice Tsague

To seek first the Kingdom of God is to desire God’s rule and God’s system above all. It is to allow God’s will to be done in every situation, no matter how challenging. A daily concern for many entrepreneurs is how they will make ends meet. How will we meet payroll? How we will pay the rent? How will we pay back the loan? How will we pay for the marketing campaign? Will we meet our revenue projections? Do we have enough savings in case of an emergency? These concerns can lead to worry, which can take away our peace, trust and reliance on the sovereignty of God to supply all of our needs by His riches in Glory through Christ Jesus. No matter how profitable the business is it is difficult not to be concerned about these things since money is the bloodline of business. In Matthew 6:25-34 Jesus teaches us a unique approach to addressing these concerns.

Typically, we are taught that if we do not have resources to take care of our business and personal needs, we should devise a direct strategy to acquire these resources by any means necessary. But Jesus reminds us that that is the way of the world. It is the world that goes after things; it is the world that gets overly concerned about money.

Jesus instructs us not to worry about money. God is able to provide for the needs of the birds, which neither sow nor reap. Since you are more valuable than they are, will He not much more provide for you? The interesting thing about the example that Jesus gives in the Bible which states if a man does not work he shall not eat, and the principle of sowing and reaping, were put in place as a means to provide for our needs. Here is a bird that does not work, neither sows nor reaps, yet its needs are met. And what about you who work according to God’s plan for your life, will God not be able to meet your needs? He concludes by saying that after these things the Gentiles seek.

Gentiles are symbolic of worldly entrepreneurs who are overly concerned with how they will make ends meet. As a result of this concern, they commit all of their efforts and energies toward one thing; how to make money. Many of them are able to accomplish their objectives but with certain negative consequences. The world has its own methods on how to make money and accumulate things.  It is a science that has been developed throughout the ages and has been tested and proven. The problem is that it has not been able to remove the negative consequences.

Many of us who aspire to be Biblical Entrepreneurs are not ignorant of those strategies; we just choose not to employ those methods since they come with certain negative consequences. In my experience, most Biblical Entrepreneurs know how to make money; their problem is how to make money without the negative consequences.  These negative consequences include anxiety, lack of peace, lack of fulfillment, guilt, and physical and eternal death.  God has put natural principles in the earth realm that work both for the believer and the unbeliever. What is required of the Biblical Entrepreneur is to apply the natural principles without violating spiritual principles?  It almost seems as if the unbeliever has an unfair advantage because he is not required to apply spiritual laws since he is ignorant of them. While for the believer Jesus says, your strategy to make ends meet and even exceed your own expectation is to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.

As a Biblical Entrepreneur, you must not employ your own methods and strategies or lean to your own understanding, rather, you ought to first consider God’s will, and God’s way in the situation. In other words, do not follow your natural instincts which tend to be carnal, expedient and natural. Allow the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ to guide you as you do business. Let them direct your every decision. Let them guide your every step.

How do you do this you may ask? You do this by going to the Lord in prayer, operating your business by God’s principles, as well as seeking the council of those whom you trust to be men and women who are filled with the wisdom of God and trusting God for the results.

The evidence that you are seeking first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness will be demonstrated by how much peace you experience in the midst of challenges and the demonstration of the fruit of the Spirit in your life.
