7 Great Ideas for Your Church to Economically Empower Your Congregation and Community

A few weeks ago I posted an article Has the Church Done Enough to Respond to the Recession? This was partly inspired by my own perceived notions and research by Barna Group, which reveals the church is falling short in in terms of providing proactive support to the economic crisis for their members or communities. Some of this is due to the financial pain churches are feeling. Some of it in my opinion is that pastors and church leaders may not be aware of many of the practical things they can do – separate from just giving money – to those who are hurting financially.

When I posted that question on LinkedIn and 48Days.net forums I got some great feedback. Here are a few ideas your church can use to provide assistance and direction to your congregation and communities who are experiencing some severe economic pains…

  1. Host Financial Peace classes
  2. 1-on-1 financial counseling for families
  3. 1-on-1 business coaching for entrepreneurs
  4. Monthly e-newsletter from the church with financial tips
  5. Marketplace-themed messages
  6. Host a budgeting workshop
  7. Create space for a barter system/network for goods and services

One evening I was reading through some mails from ministries that I used to support in the past when what one of them wrote caught my attention. Talking about their supporters he said “Our income this year has been down – no doubt due to the ongoing economic crisis. Some of our friends and supporters have lost their jobs or suffered other financial losses, and we understand that. Times are hard”. It takes a true shepherd to know when his sheep are not doing fine but a hireling does not care about the sheep. There is a time for the shepherd to turn and help the sheep that are weary. There is an Amazon Kindle e-book “Dealing With Unemployment And Poverty (A Teaching And Prayer Manual), which I think will be of help to both pastors and laity.

    • Bennard,
You’re right about a true shepherd vs a hireling. The church definitely seems to be lacking pastors with a real shepherd’s heart these days. For others, I’m not sure they really know how to deal with the issue of unemployment and poverty in their churches outside of prayer. Thanks for the e-book resource. Be blessed!
