KBU Partners with Local Community to Launch Innovative Jobs Program

What is The (Un)Employment Alternative?

This is Kingdom Business University’s (KBU) ambitious plan to stimulate the creation of 1 million jobs through faith-based, purpose-centered entrepreneurship education. We are starting in Cedartown, GA. Help us today at www.theunemploymentalternative.com.

The Impact
The vision of the Coalition of Concerned Citizens of Cedartown, GA – a diverse group including pastors, entrepreneurs, social workers, and city officials – is to use entrepreneurship education as a catalyst to bring social and economic empowerment back to a region that is challenged with crime, unemployment, poverty, and lack of opportunities. They have partnered with Kingdom Business University to provide entrepreneurship classes that will restore hope, launch new businesses, create jobs, and catalyze new opportunities for the unemployed, ex-offenders, and youth who have been unable to find viable work and sustainable income sources.

What We Need & What You Get
Our goal is to raise $2500 on IndieGogo, which will pay for the first 30 participants. The more we raise the more people and can teach. Our desire is to offer this program at a minimal financial cost to the participants, although they will be asked to invest in this opportunity in other ways, such as community service. The amount will go towards:curriculum, facilities, supplies, and other related expenses. Additional funds will also be applied toward establishing a business incubator that will provide on-going support to graduates.

We have some great perks for those who contribute at the $25, $100, and $250 levels. Just look to column on the right side of this page www.theunemploymentalternative.com ▶

Other Ways You Can Help
This project is just the beginning. We aspire to help communities around this country implement their own economic recovery plan. In addition to your donations, help us spread the word. We are more than willing to come to your city, community, or church to talk about this innovative program and how we can create a customized version for your city.

It’s a Sin Thing, Not a Skin Thing… Thoughts About Trayvon Martin

These are just a few of the 74 young people who were murdered in Chicago in the 11 months between September 2009 and August 2010 (more than 78% by gunshot). [Source: www.truestaris.com]

Also in Chicago, more than 530 people under the age of 21 have been killed since 2008 and many more have been shot or have otherwise suffered violence—often at the hands of their peers and particularly in the city’s African-American and Latino communities. Nearly 80 percent of youth homicides occurred in 22 black or Latino communities on the city’s South, Southwest and West sides—even though just one-third of the city’s population resided in those communities. [Source: The Chicago Reporter].

I wonder is God any more angry, hurt, or vengeful when violence against one of His children happens at the hands of someone who looks like them versus someone who doesn’t. I wonder is He any more outraged when someone from the same culture or ethnicity murders an innocent teen versus someone from a different culture or ethnicity.

It’s interesting the things we as Christians have selective outrage about. I know a lot of local outrage was expressed in several cities where it seems like violence has gotten out of control over the past few years. But the national outrage was nowhere close to what it has been for Trayvon. I’m not saying it shouldn’t be there for him, but what about all the other victims who preceded him.

This may not be a popular stance I’m about to present, but the tragic death of Trayvon Martin and the hundreds of other senseless deaths of our youth (and adults) highlight a much deeper and widespread problem than racism or poverty or injustice. It really highlights the sin culture in this country as our core problem. Everything else are just symptoms of this central root.

Our society drinks the blood of excessive violence, sex, and debauchery everyday through personal indulgences, movies, music, TV, and video games, but then we are surprised / shocked / outraged when we see reality perpetuating entertainment perpetuating reality. This sick cycle won’t stop until we stop it!

The root of racism is hatred, which is birthed from sin. Therefore, racism is really a sin thing, much more than it is a skin thing (satan will use any scheme to divide us: racism, sexism, classism, ageism, etc. Don’t get tricked into participating with his schemes). It would then lead to the truth that Christians need to be focused on grace-based solutions, not just race-based solutions. Simply changing laws, rules, and regulations will only produce short-term, peripheral change. Laws may provide a deterrent before and punishment after the fact, but they can’t prevent murder. The only thing that can prevent murder is the love of God, i.e. people who understand how much God loves them, which then compels them to love everyone else no matter what they look like. (oh, and every murder is a “hate crime” if we’re using God’s laws to judge the action versus just our own, but I digress…)

It’s interesting that the Civil Rights movement was led by men and women of God who were looking to transform the soul of America, not just laws and bathroom signs. They understood the spiritual foundation had to precede social action, otherwise social action lacks sustainable change and lasting effectiveness. Jesus came to bring complete heart transformation, not just behavior modification or racial understanding (Galatians 3:26-28).

The Bible clearly spells out for Christians how we can collectively transform the culture into one that is healthy and viable versus broken and hurting. 2 Chronicles 7:14 is speaking to Kingdom citizens, not unbelievers: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

You might read that Scripture and be thinking that we can’t spend all our time praying without going and doing something against oppression or injustice. Well, the beautiful thing about seeking God’s face through prayer is that He reveals His will and provides answers to our problems. He will tell us what we need to do to strategically and systematically change the systems of oppression and injustice. Without His input man-made ideas and solutions will have minimal impact.

Many people are angry at Mr. Zimmerman and want justice served against him. He will have his day in court (before a judge or public opinion). However, God’s judgment starts with the family of God (1 Peter 4:17). And part of His judgment against the church for the condition of this country and the world will be how much we prayed versus how much we protested (or did other things to distract us from the most important things). If you protest more than you pray, your efforts will be limited in the grand scheme of things.

It’s OK to protest, but you better pray in advance, during, and after, so that when the protests are over, people slip back into normalcy, and the media has all gone home (until the next news making event), you will have some divine answers that will transform hearts and minds, not just man-made solutions that have little long-term effect.

I pray for Trayvon’s family that God will bring healing, peace, and restoration.

I pray for all the family’s across this country that have needlessly and senselessly lost a young person.

And I pray for God’s church to wake up the responsibility we have to this country and the world to seek His face for His answers and stop making up our own as we go along.

Mom Loses 2 Babies, Survives Cancer, Moves to Haiti

When I launched Passion in Action TV a few weeks ago, my goal was to highlight people who are impacting others’ lives by living their passion. The following story is a perfect example of two courageous people who have turned their tragedy into triumph and their pain into a passionate pursuit.

The last 4 years have been incredibly tumultuous for Adam and Kara Cole. She survived the rare cancer choriocarcinoma and lost 2 babies, the most recently only a few short months ago. Their response to their recent tragedy was not to crawl in a hole somewhere and marinate in their pain. Instead they decided to move to Haiti to help the post-earthquake recovery effort by investing in people who have experienced their own tragedies. Check out the CNN iReport video…

One’s life purpose is often discovered in the midst of great suffering. After watching the video and reading the story, it would be hard for me to conjure an acceptable excuse for why someone can’t find purpose in their pain that can be used for someone else’s good.

I hope you’ll get a chance to watch this week’s Passion in Action episode Thursday at 5pm only on www.InternetFabulous.TV where we’ll be highlighting more people who are changing the world one life at a time through their passion.

What do you think about the Coles? Could you do something like this after such a great tragedy?

Far Above Rubies by Patrice Tsague

by Patrice Tsague

“A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.” ~ Proverbs 31:10

We celebrated Mother’s Day yesterday, a day that is set aside every year throughout the United States and some other parts of the world to honor mothers and celebrate motherhood.  I’m personally grateful to my grandmother, my mother, my wife and the many women who have positively impacted my life.  There are no successful entrepreneurs who can say that their grandmother, mother, or wife was not critical to their success.  Women are the backbone of our society; they can cause us to fail or succeed.

We cannot choose our grandmother or our mothers, but we can choose our wives.  You can only be as successful as the person you marry.  Like the virtuous woman mentioned in Proverbs 31: 10-31, her price is “far above rubies.”  A ruby is a precious stone, usually more costly than a diamond of the same size. The Bible states that the worth of this woman is far above this great, precious stone.  What would make a woman worth so much?  Here are a few of her characteristics:

She is trustworthy – Her husband does not have to worry about anything. He entrusts her with his finances, his deep inner fears and concerns, his children, and even his business affairs.

She is industrious – This woman is a Biblical Entrepreneur, she not only supports her husband, but takes every opportunity to use the talents that God gifted her. She is never idle and is profitable in all of her endeavors.

She is a homemaker – Beyond being a business woman, she is also concerned with the things of her home.  She realizes that her first responsibility is the stability of her home.

She is a wise steward – She is a great manager of resources.  She is not a consumer but a producer. She resists the temptation to spend money on things that have no eternal value. She generously gives to those in need.

She is gentle and wise in her speech – She has a meek and quiet demeanor, but when she speaks, wisdom comes out of her mouth.  She has hidden the Word of God in her heart, and out of the abundance of her heart she speaks.

She is a nurturing and caring mother – She takes her responsibility as a mother very seriously. She does not allow anything to get in the way of providing nurturing care to her children to ensure their spiritual and natural success.

She fears the Lord – She recognizes that her external beauty must be the result of an internal reverence for the Lord.

I know you may be wondering, “Does this woman really exist?” Yes she does.  I married one.  I believe every woman is born with the potential of being a virtuous woman.  How fully developed she becomes depends on her upbringing and the influences she has in her life.  It is the responsibility of her husband to provide the leadership and nurturing that will allow her to fully blossom into the virtuous woman God has called her to be.

They Shall Become One Flesh by Patrice Tsague

by Patrice Tsague

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” ~ Genesis 1:24

If you are married and were to die today would your mate be able to continue the business?  Would they know enough about your business affairs to provide leadership on the next steps?

Unfortunately, too many kingdom business stewards operate their businesses apart from their mates. They see the business as theirs alone and the only contribution that the business makes to their marriage is the financial provision it brings to the family.  Business can be a great tool that brings couples together and unity in the marriage.  It can also be the source of great stress to a marriage and a wedge that drives couples apart.  All married kingdom business stewards operate a family business whether their mate is actively involved or not.

Men have historically committed grievous errors in not involving their mates in their business affairs, and many women entrepreneurs are modeling those same bad behaviors today. These errors cannot be blamed on the world. Rather, the responsibility rests with the church in the way it has traditionally taught about headship and dominion.  The dominion mandate in Genesis was not given to males alone but given to both the male and the female.  “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in our image, according to our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the seas, over the birds of the air, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’  So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Gen 1:26-27)

When the bible refers to the original man that was made in the image and likeness of God it is not referring to the gender male but rather to the species of man.  The species man combines both the male and the female.  This is the reason that when God wanted to provide man with a companion, He did not create another being – but rather He did surgery on the man to separate the female gender from the male gender.  Notice that after the surgery, Adam rejoiced and affirmed his new companion and declared that together they shall become one flesh.  This enabled them to operate in the original order, with two separate bodies but one in soul, mind and spirit.  The question is then raised about headship – is the male still not the head?  Headship has nothing to do with oneness.  Headship has to do with order.  Just because the male is the head does not mean he cannot operate as one with the female.  As a matter of fact, headship within a marriage cannot be effective without oneness in the marriage.  If there is headship without oneness then the marriage will be dysfunctional.  Headship without oneness leads to stress and can also lead to eventual divorce.

How do you know if you are not operating as one flesh with your mate in business?

  1. It is your business and not yours and theirs
  2. You do not involve them in the major decisions of the business
  3. You never have family business meetings
  4. You do not see them as an asset in the business
  5. You do not embrace their ideas
  6. You intentionally keep them out of the loop
  7. If you were to die they would not know how to continue or exit the business

How do you walk in oneness?

  1. Declare the business as a family business
  2. Establish a family advisory board or board of directors with regular meetings (monthly, quarterly, or biannually)
  3. Make sure your mate understands the vision and general goals of the business and how it connects to God’s plan for your family
  4. Do not make any major decisions without involving your mate and make sure you both are in agreement.
  5. Stop referring to it as your business but as our business
  6. Pray together about the business
  7. Seek a business coach to guide you along if necessary

Marriage is one of the greatest institutions that God created; it can be a place of great fulfillment and reward.  A dysfunctional marriage however can be worse than a prison.  It is better not to marry than to marry and not be committed to enjoying the best that marriage has to offer.  Your business can either be a tool that God uses to enhance fulfillment in your marriage or a weapon used by the enemy to further bring division.  You must be committed not to give place to the enemy and seek God’s wisdom and guidance as to how to walk in oneness with your mate in business. The rewards will not just be fulfillment in the marriage but can also lead to business growth and success.

6 BIG Dream Lessons from Cinderella Man

A couple nights ago I watched Cinderella Man with Russell Crowe for the first time (yeah, I know it came out 5 years ago). Especially considering the economic times that we currently live in, it was a truly empowering story of resilience, perseverance, courage, humility, and dignity in the face of overwhelming personal and financial challenges.

If you don’t already know, this movie was based on the true story of boxer James J. Braddock during the Great Depression. After injuries and age derailed a successful boxing career, prompting the boxing commission to revoke his license, he and his family fell on really hard times. With work hard to come by, he had to go on public assistance and almost lost his house and family. After two years out of the sport, a lucky break allowed him to get back into boxing on a one-fight deal, and he eventually ascended all the way to become  a most unlikely heavyweight champion of world. Joe Louis, one of the greatest boxers of all time, said Braddock was “the most courageous fighter I ever fought.

Here are 6 BIG Dream lessons that I gleaned from the movie…

  1. Your ultimate purpose is bigger than an individual goal – Fighting for a world championship is great. Fighting for your family is greater. His ultimate dream was to give his wife and three children a great life.
  2. Turn what’s broken into your benefit – Breaking his right hand allowed his left hand to get stronger so that when he made his comeback, he was a more complete boxer who could punch hard with both hands.
  3. Always remember what you’re fighting for – One of the best lines in the movie came when a reporter asked Braddock before the world championship fight what was his motivation for fighting. Braddock’s simple but profound answer was, “Milk.” The simple things in life can often be our biggest motivators.
  4. Stick to what you know best – He approached his profession seriously and was extremely confident – not cocky – in his skills. He worked hard to be the best and never quit. In all his fights he was never knocked out.
  5. Use where you come from to push you where you’re going – During his successful comeback, he always remembered what it was like to have nothing. He stayed humble throughout his ascension, because he realized how close he had come to losing everything and how easily he could fall back into that place.
  6. Stay focused on your family – No matter how difficult your life gets, never lose focus on the ones who are closest to you.

Celebrating Someone Small Who’s Really Someone B.I.G.

When people see the acronym in the title of my book Dream B.I.G. in 3D they often ask, “what does ‘B.I.G.’ stand for?” Although the answer is contained in the subtitle, I politely answer, “Bold, Innovative, God-Inspired.” This acronym represents my recognition that God-inspire dreams lead to God-inspired lives that are courageous, creative, influential, and transformational.

When I came up with this title I was focused on “dreaming big” in a new kind of way. Although people have been exhorting others to “dream big” for a long time, I wanted to present a different perspective in my book. This perspective was based on my deep desire to ignite people to live a dream whose significance was more important to them than its size (i.e. the acquisition of large or expensive material possessions).

Interestingly, it took a long time after I came up with the title to realize that B.I.G. applies to more than just dreams. It can also apply to a vast number of things – natural and manufactured – that have God’s unmistakable influence on them. One example is sand. Although a single grain of sand is infinitesimally small, all the sand in the world is infinitely huge. Sand is B.I.G.

Paper clips are small, but they probably number in the billions, and their usefulness is grossly under-appreciated until they can’t be found. Paper clips are B.I.G.

Diamonds are also relatively small in size, but their beauty and worth are matched only by the desire of those who want them… Diamonds are B.I.G.

I also realize that my new baby girl born yesterday is B.I.G. Is there not a better example in the universe where God breathed His spirit – inspired – into something that was creatively bold and incredibly innovative? I mean who else could have formed a human being out of a pile of dirt and given him purpose in life?

So although my new little girl is a relatively small human being at less than 7 pounds, she is really B.I.G. Not because of her size, but more importantly because of the significant plan God has already designed for her life.

I hope you realize how B.I.G. you are too.

Sweet dreams,
Paul Wilson, Jr.
