Your Profession is Your Pulpit

Your Profession is Your Pulpit, my most recent Kingdom Business article written for Brotha Online Magazine is now ready for your reading pleasure. I focus on helping Christians understand the incredible opportunity they have in their current business or career to advance the Kingdom of God. You don’t need a church pulpit to make a great impact! Here’s a short excerpt:

Did you know that every Christian is in full-time ministry? Whether you realize it or not, if you are a Christian you a full-time minister in the Kingdom of God. You may not work for a church or have an official title of pastor, bishop, apostle, or evangelist, but you are indeed a minister of the Gospel. As an entrepreneur running your own business or an employee working for an organization, you have been given the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility of taking your personal ministry to the marketplace. The Apostle Paul who earned a living as a tent maker in addition to being a traveling evangelist, says it like this: “… And God has given us this task of reconciling people to Him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself, no longer counting their sins against them. And He gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:18-19).

Worship While You W.O.R.K.

Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 4:11

In the dictionary, worship means “to show reverence and adoration“. A true understanding of the worship of God is that it’s more than just showing reverence and adoration in a religious ceremony, but it’s a lifestyle of acknowledgement, adoration, and alignment with His plans and expectations. That lifestyle includes the work you do on a daily basis.

So as you go to work everyday as an employee or entrepreneur, the best way to view your work is that it should be… Worship Of the Real King!

Here’s some practical examples of what this looks like…

  • Work in spirit and truth – Work while continually acknowledging God for the strength, creativity, and ability He gives you to work (John 4:23)
  • Work in the beauty of holiness – It’s a beautifully holy act to work with excellence and dedicate your work to the Lord, not just as something to do to make a living or please someone else (Psalm 96:9)
  • Work in your lane – Stay true to His purpose and calling for your life (Proverbs 4:25)
  • Work with excellence Be the best. Set the standard of leadership (Daniel 5:14)
  • Work with diligence – Work hard and smart (Proverbs 10:5)
  • Work with creativity – Use the ideas, strategies, and concepts God provides through prayer and revelation (Proverbs 8:12)
  • Work with integrity – Let all your dealings be above reproach (Proverbs 11:1)
  • Work with passion – Let your zeal for God energize your work (Romans 12:11)
  • Work toward reconciliation – Take advantage of daily opportunities for life on life discipleship (2 Corinthians 5:19)

Today is a marvelous day for you to be transformed in the way you think about your work. Honor God in your work and you will experience Him in a whole new way!

Dream It! Begin It! Finish It!

But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it?” Luke 14:28

A construction marvel was just opened to the public a couple of weeks ago along the Nevada-Arizona border. The Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge, which has the longest single concrete arch in the Western Hemisphere, was started in 2003 and cost $240 million to build (watch the construction time lapse video below).

In July 2009 I was at the Hoover Dam near the bypass bridge and recorded one of my first location-based motivational videos (watch below). I was able to see it prior to the construction crews connecting it in the middle. It was incredible to see then and even more amazing to see now!

It reminds me how important it is as an entrepreneur to complete the process of dreaming, due diligence, designing, developing, and delivering on your business idea. Don’t start building your business if you haven’t counted the cost to make it successful. Success doesn’t end with the dream. The dream is only the beginning.

The First “MegaChurch” Was in the Marketplace

This country has a long history of Christian leaders who have public roles and positions of influence. Many of our Founding Fathers were no different, with many of them publicly professing their Christian faith and integrating into their daily decision making. Check out this very interesting video to see how the Capitol building in Washington DC was used early on.

What are you thoughts? How do you think this relates to the current opposition of the separation between church and state?

The Responsibility of a Godly Leader by Patrice Tsague

“Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to him.  Teach them the decrees and laws, and show them the way to live and the duties they are to perform.” ~ Exodus 18:19-20

by Patrice Tsague

A godly leader is someone called by God with the ability to cast a clear vision and provide direction and guidance to others through his or her example and influence.  Godly leaders must lead in a manner that honors the Lord and accomplishes His purposes in the earth realm.

Moses is an example of a godly leader.  He was called by God and was able to cast a clear vision of the Promised Land to the people.  He guided and directed them through the wilderness all the way to the Jordan River where he then passed the leadership baton to Joshua.  Moses’ success was due in part to the guidance of his father-in-law, Jethro, who witnessed him in action and rebuked him for his bad leadership.  Moses demonstrated a lack of clarity of his leadership responsibilities by taking too much upon himself. His leadership approach would have caused burnout and frustration for the people thus hindering the success of the mission.  Led by the Spirit, Jethro instructed Moses on his responsibilities and the most effective way to carry them out.

Let us glean from the instructions that Jethro gave Moses so we can apply them to our lives:

  • Stand before God for the people – Godly leaders must intercede before God on behalf of their employees and those they are responsible for.  They must make intercession for them on matters of their spiritual growth, family life, and social and financial development.  They must plead their cases before God as Moses did for the children of Israel.  They must not attempt to handle difficult matters themselves but rather take them before the Lord for guidance, instruction and wisdom.
  • Cast the vision – God always provides His leaders with a clear revelation of the vision.  Vision is the ultimate goal that the Lord has given you. It is what you aspire to become. God gave Moses a clear vision of the Promised Land.  A godly leader must provide the people with clear direction of where they are going.  The Bible states that without vision the people perish.  People cannot follow a leader who is unclear of where he/she is going.  Godly leaders must be able to clearly communicate the vision so others can run with it.
  • Provide the people with direction and guidance – Casting a clear vision is not sufficient to ensure effective leadership; the people need to be guided and directed.  Godly leaders must be able to teach the people how to realize the vision and equip them with the tools necessary to carry out their responsibilities.  Moses often found the people discouraged or becoming impatient with the journey.  He had to constantly direct and guide them so they could stay the course.
  • Raise up others – Godly leaders are not permanent nor eternal.  As great as Moses was, he could not go all the way to the Promised Land; he had to pass the baton to someone else who would become responsible for continuing the journey.  What if Moses had not raised up Joshua?  A key responsibility for godly leaders is to duplicate themselves.  You must raise others by delegating responsibilities to them based on their abilities.  Trust them to handle those responsibilities and support them in those areas where they are weak.
  • Oversee the work – The ultimate responsibility for the success of the organization always rests on the leader who must be accountable to God for the outcome.  Godly leaders must provide oversight to ensure that the work is being accomplished according to plan.  Although others such as Aaron were called to co-labor with Moses, the ultimate responsibility rested on Moses.  As a godly leader, the ultimate responsibility rests with you. You must be prepared to give an account to God.

The Ideal Staff: Hireling vs Levite by Patrice Tsague

by Patrice Tsague

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.” John 10:10-15

One of the most common things among Biblical Entrepreneurs is the challenge of identifying and recruiting good staff. The sad truth is that Christian employees are no better then the non-Christian ones. Some Business stewards even confess that they would rather hire a non-Christian then a Christian. Why is it that we are not able to find believers who can walk in the following scriptures:

“Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.” I Timothy 6:1- 2

Christian business stewards must commit themselves to creating a workplace that is conducive to workplace productivity, fulfillment and efficiency while Christian employees must commit themselves to working with the heart of a Levite/Shepherd versus a hireling.

A hireling is a wage worker or a hired servant whose sole concern is their compensation while a Levite is a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ who is called into full time service and therefore committed to serving others and caring for their place of employment as unto the Lord.

The characteristics of a Hireling are:

  • Steals from the company
  • Kills the vision
  • Destroys relationships
  • Does not take ownership
  • Protects themselves at the expense of the customer
  • Does not care about the well being of the customer
  • Serves by compulsion with a private agenda

The characteristics of a Levite are:

  • Honors the Lord
  • Knows their customer by name
  • Leads the Customer toward good things
  • Takes ownership of the company
  • Puts the customer needs before their own
  • Is an example
  • Serves willingly

Are you a hireling or a Levite? My prayer for you this week is that the Lord will help you to cultivate the heart of a Levite in your workplace for His glory and honor.

“Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.” Ephesians 6:5-9

“Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God; And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.” Colossians 3:22-24

The Science of Motivation by Daniel Pink

Sacred and Secular Coming Together in Business

In times past such a distinction was made between the “sacred” ministry roles and positions in the church versus “secular” positions in the marketplace that leaders outside the church were made to feel inferior to those who worked in full-time ministry within the church.
Fortunately those times are changing. A new group of pastors and church leaders is recognizing the significance and ministry potential of maximizing the combination of sacred and secular ministry to bring the redemptive and transformative power of Christ to people through traditional and non-traditional means.
In a recent blog, Business as Missions Network profiled a few pastors who are actively breaking down the wall between the sacred and the secular. Here’s a link to the story: http://www.businessasmissionnetwork.com
Many organizations now exist that are strategically and practically bridging the gap between the secular and the sacred, such as…
Beyond this short list, there are many other organizations and businesses that are also helping to bridge the gap and break down unnecessary walls that limit the potential of leaders and entrepreneurs to be the church in the marketplace.
The potential of business leaders to be transformational change agents in lives and communities is exponential. Hopefully, the trend will continue that leverages the best of both the sacred and the secular.
I would love to hear your thoughts. What is your experience with this topic? What barriers still need to be overcome to break down walls between sacred and secular ministry?
