Christian Entrepreneurs Are Kings and Priests in the Marketplace

“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” ~ 1 Peter 2:9

Do you know who you really are in Christ? Do you realize the true authority and power that you have? There is more to you than you realize as an entrepreneur or business leader. God has more for you to do for His Kingdom than just grow your business. Here is a short excerpt from the article I wrote for the current issue of Brotha Magazine, Kings and Priests in Business:

So, how does this royal priesthood relate to business? How do entrepreneurs and business leaders live out their priestly royalty in the marketplace? From God’s perspective there is no longer a sacred versus secular divide. When you are in God’s family all that you do is to be considered sacred, whether you work in the kingdom as a pastor, CEO, teacher, lawyer, engineer, janitor, etc.

As we continue to move forward in history, Christians in the marketplace are going to play an even greater role in the advancement of God’s kingdom than they have in the past. Did you know that 97% of Christians work in the secular world, not the church? Now join this truth with the fact that you will spend more time with the people you work with than a pastor ever will. Hopefully you can see that although you are operating in a secular environment, you have the opportunity to do something sacred every day while you are working. It is called evangelism and discipleship.

3 Ways Entrepreneurship Education Can Elevate Economically-Challenged Communities

I have believed for a long time that entrepreneurship education could be used as a strategic empowerment tool to lift up those in poverty-stricken communities. I’m very excited to see social entrepreneurship strategies being used all over the world to elevate people and communities out of their financial and social distress. Unfortunately, I don’t often see the same entrepreneurial energy and intentionality utilized here in the United States to help those who are challenged will lack of access to resources and tools that can help create new avenues of economic opportunity.

Entrepreneurship education is just as valid a poverty-smashing solution in urban communities in the U.S. as they are in slums in India or villages in Africa. Even more, when entrepreneurship education is paired with Biblical principles, you have the makings of people who are not just skilled as businesspeople, they also develop the morals and character to operate a business that’s profitable and positively impacts others.

Here are three practical ways entrepreneurship education can elevate economically-challenged communities:

  1. Sense of Ownership: Embedded within an entrepreneurial mindset is a sense of ownership. Entrepreneurs who operate businesses within a community usually have a heightened desire to take accountability for what happens in that community, because they know they need that community to succeed if their business is going to be sustainable.
  2. Sense of Purpose: Without a revelation of their purpose and significance, people cast off restraint and run wild (Proverbs 29:18 NIV). When people have no sense of purpose, they lose hope and stop caring about themselves and the people around them. Entrepreneurship education helps ignite the purpose in people to pursue something greater than what they may see around them everyday. Entrepreneurship education is an incredible platform to transport people from where they are to their God-ordained destiny.
  3. Creative Energy: People in poverty-stricken areas don’t lack creativity, they are just using their creative abilities far below the purpose for which God created them. Entrepreneurship empowerment can help people use their ingenuity beyond just basic survival or even criminal pursuits. Creative energy that wasn’t being used previously or being used for the wrong things are now channeled in a positive, beneficial direction for themselves and others.

KBU Partners with Local Community to Launch Innovative Jobs Program

What is The (Un)Employment Alternative?

This is Kingdom Business University’s (KBU) ambitious plan to stimulate the creation of 1 million jobs through faith-based, purpose-centered entrepreneurship education. We are starting in Cedartown, GA. Help us today at www.theunemploymentalternative.com.

The Impact
The vision of the Coalition of Concerned Citizens of Cedartown, GA – a diverse group including pastors, entrepreneurs, social workers, and city officials – is to use entrepreneurship education as a catalyst to bring social and economic empowerment back to a region that is challenged with crime, unemployment, poverty, and lack of opportunities. They have partnered with Kingdom Business University to provide entrepreneurship classes that will restore hope, launch new businesses, create jobs, and catalyze new opportunities for the unemployed, ex-offenders, and youth who have been unable to find viable work and sustainable income sources.

What We Need & What You Get
Our goal is to raise $2500 on IndieGogo, which will pay for the first 30 participants. The more we raise the more people and can teach. Our desire is to offer this program at a minimal financial cost to the participants, although they will be asked to invest in this opportunity in other ways, such as community service. The amount will go towards:curriculum, facilities, supplies, and other related expenses. Additional funds will also be applied toward establishing a business incubator that will provide on-going support to graduates.

We have some great perks for those who contribute at the $25, $100, and $250 levels. Just look to column on the right side of this page www.theunemploymentalternative.com ▶

Other Ways You Can Help
This project is just the beginning. We aspire to help communities around this country implement their own economic recovery plan. In addition to your donations, help us spread the word. We are more than willing to come to your city, community, or church to talk about this innovative program and how we can create a customized version for your city.

Developing the Entrepreneurial Mind of Christ

It’s that time again! The new February/March issue of Brotha Online Magazine is ready and available for your exploration. My contribution to this edition is entitled, Developing the Entrepreneurial Mind of Christ. I also have a special accompanying video to go with this month’s article (click here). Here is a short excerpt from the article:

Albert Einstein was an intellectual phenomenon. Steve Jobs was a creative mastermind. Thomas Edison was a genius as bright as they come (pun intended). However none of these entrepreneurial inventors measures up to the brilliance, inventiveness, resourcefulness, prowess, and many other words I could use to describe our indescribable God.

God is the original and ultimate entrepreneur. In the beginning of Genesis 1, through Jesus (Hebrews 1:2), He created something incredible out of chaos. At the end of Genesis 1, they created man and woman in their divine image and told them to take dominion over the earth, be fruitful, and multiply. In order for us to accomplish these three mandates we have to use divine characteristics of entrepreneurship, including but not limited to faith, intelligence, creative ability, and resourcefulness, all of which God displayed as He manifested the universe.

When most people hear the word entrepreneur they automatically think about business and selling stuff. However, you don’t have to be in business to be entrepreneurial. My simple definition for entrepreneurial is the ability to create value for people using attributes given to us by God. So using this definition, everyone should be entrepreneurial, which also describes how we should be operating in the world with the mind of Christ.

Dream It! Begin It! Finish It!

But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it?” Luke 14:28

A construction marvel was just opened to the public a couple of weeks ago along the Nevada-Arizona border. The Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge, which has the longest single concrete arch in the Western Hemisphere, was started in 2003 and cost $240 million to build (watch the construction time lapse video below).

In July 2009 I was at the Hoover Dam near the bypass bridge and recorded one of my first location-based motivational videos (watch below). I was able to see it prior to the construction crews connecting it in the middle. It was incredible to see then and even more amazing to see now!

It reminds me how important it is as an entrepreneur to complete the process of dreaming, due diligence, designing, developing, and delivering on your business idea. Don’t start building your business if you haven’t counted the cost to make it successful. Success doesn’t end with the dream. The dream is only the beginning.

Live Passionately!

Let Your Customers Choose What They Want to Pay

A Panera Bread Co. restaurant in St. Louis, that was converted to a non-profit cafe, is allowing customers to choose what they want to pay for their meals. The owners came up with this innovative approach as a way to give back to their community. Cashiers show customers what their order costs and then allows them to pay what they want or can afford. Those who can’t pay are asked to donate their time. The owners are not sure if it will be profitable but they are willing to test people’s generosity to find out.

What do you think of this business model? Could you try something like this with your business?

Entrepreneurial Pockets of Inspiration in Economic Uncertainty

As we have just come up for air from the super-sales-driven Thanksgiving weekend, it’s very easy to see the desperate wishes of companies that this holiday season will help to turn around their financial trajectory. They cling to the hope that although companies keep shedding jobs, people will ignore that and keep plunking down cash and credit, which will keep the big behemoths afloat.

This current period of economic uncertainty underlies the fact that “necessity is the mother of invention.” In recent history, there has been no other time – or opportunity – that has presented a greater necessity for innovation and inspiration than right now. That’s why it’s great to see entrepreneurs who take this to heart and are able to thrive while others are just struggling to survive.
Entrepreneur.com has an article, “The Entrepreneur Economy“, which highlights how smaller entrepreneurial companies have been able to successfully respond to the morphing economy with new ideas and innovation, while their much larger counterparts are struggling. Here’s an excerpt:

“We don’t have to do things the same way. We can take the economy in hand and drive our own destinies. And a movement that has been slowly building in the business world is finally taking hold: We’re seeing the beginnings of the entrepreneurial economy, a system built on nimble, low-overhead, oftentimes small companies with fluid workforces, rather than the massive conglomerates that have upheld the economy for decades.”

As our economy tugs and pulls to get back on solid footing, it will cause significant changes in what we call the “workforce”. Whether by choice or circumstance, people will have to become more entrepreneurial. You don’t have to become a victim of change. You can lead change – entrepreneurially.

The 3C’s of Social Networking

For any small business to grow, it needs to continually extend its reach, enhance its relevance, and expand its relationships. Social networking is a critical tool that will help you do each of these things to build a “community of conversations” with your current and prospective customers.
Most entrepreneurs can identify with needing the 3C’s of life – being calm, cool, and collective. However, these are not the only 3C’s entrepreneurs need to be familiar with. The 3C’s I’m talking about relate to the three positive benefits I have experienced since strategically incorporating social networking into my business activities:
  1. Connections – I can find and virtually “meet” more prospective customers in shorter amounts of time. I have also reconnected with many friends and acquaintances from high school and college who now are also potential customers.
  2. Communication – I can build my brand more easily, effectively and inexpensively through the key messages I disseminate to my target market by using these technologies. Also, because they are accessible from my Blackberry, I’m able to do it without being tied down to my laptop.
  3. Collaboration – I can brainstorm new ideas in real time with other entrepreneurs and individuals to develop new solutions and business applications.
The main social networking platforms I use are Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. I have had a LinkedIn profile for a couple of years, but I didn’t fully leverage its capabilities until recently. I just started using Facebook and Twitter earlier this year. These tools have benefited my business tremendously in a short amount of time.
A social networking strategy needs to be in the toolkit of every small business owner. If you need some help getting started, check out these articles:
Don’t underestimate the power of social networks to be potential launching pads for new business opportunities.

Super Risk, Super Reward?

$3 million for 30 seconds. That’s the going rate for commercial ads being sold by NBC for this year’s Super Bowl. That’s a 10% increase over last year’s price of $2.7 million (I guess the recession hasn’t hit everywhere yet).

With the Super Bowl being a globally televised event that has the highest ratings of any television show, that $3 million could be a no-brainer investment – if it’s spent wisely. But of course if you have watched the Super Bowl over the years you know that some companies haven’t spent their money all that well.

Here’s one of my favorites from last year…

What would you do if you had $3 million to spend for a 30 second commercial? How would you spend it on your business or organization? I would love to hear your comments.
