Jesus Was An Entrepreneur in the Healing Business

The new April/May issue of Brotha Online Magazine is ready and available for your exploration. My contribution to this edition is entitled, The Marketplace of Healing (I also have a special accompanying video, click here).

Jesus was in the healing business and regularly healed people in the marketplaces. Mark 6:56 is just one example. Here is a short excerpt from my article:

Do you believe God’s healing power is omnipresent? Do you believe people can be healed anywhere, including the workplace? Do you think someone could receive a miracle on your job? Do you believe God could use you to do that?
In the Old Testament, God dwelt in buildings, and visited people periodically. However, in the New Testament – which we are still living in now – God chooses to dwell in His people, and is ever-present. 2 Corinthians 6:16-17 tells us, “… for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
So as a living, breathing, moving Temple of the Holy Spirit, Almighty God is with you, even on your job or in your business. He delights in being close to you and wants to be involved in all aspects and details of your life. And since He is at work in you, He also wants to go to work with you! He sees the needs of the people you work with and wants to work through you to help them get a real breakthrough. Christ in you is the hope of glory!

Developing the Entrepreneurial Mind of Christ

It’s that time again! The new February/March issue of Brotha Online Magazine is ready and available for your exploration. My contribution to this edition is entitled, Developing the Entrepreneurial Mind of Christ. I also have a special accompanying video to go with this month’s article (click here). Here is a short excerpt from the article:

Albert Einstein was an intellectual phenomenon. Steve Jobs was a creative mastermind. Thomas Edison was a genius as bright as they come (pun intended). However none of these entrepreneurial inventors measures up to the brilliance, inventiveness, resourcefulness, prowess, and many other words I could use to describe our indescribable God.

God is the original and ultimate entrepreneur. In the beginning of Genesis 1, through Jesus (Hebrews 1:2), He created something incredible out of chaos. At the end of Genesis 1, they created man and woman in their divine image and told them to take dominion over the earth, be fruitful, and multiply. In order for us to accomplish these three mandates we have to use divine characteristics of entrepreneurship, including but not limited to faith, intelligence, creative ability, and resourcefulness, all of which God displayed as He manifested the universe.

When most people hear the word entrepreneur they automatically think about business and selling stuff. However, you don’t have to be in business to be entrepreneurial. My simple definition for entrepreneurial is the ability to create value for people using attributes given to us by God. So using this definition, everyone should be entrepreneurial, which also describes how we should be operating in the world with the mind of Christ.

Surveys reveal that most Christians feel they are not being trained for their calling in the workplace through the local church. Further, many Christians are frustrated because they don’t see a fit for their gifts in traditional ministry settings. The Ideal Staff: Hireling vs Levite by Patrice Tsague

by Patrice Tsague

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.” John 10:10-15

One of the most common things among Biblical Entrepreneurs is the challenge of identifying and recruiting good staff. The sad truth is that Christian employees are no better then the non-Christian ones. Some Business stewards even confess that they would rather hire a non-Christian then a Christian. Why is it that we are not able to find believers who can walk in the following scriptures:

“Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.” I Timothy 6:1- 2

Christian business stewards must commit themselves to creating a workplace that is conducive to workplace productivity, fulfillment and efficiency while Christian employees must commit themselves to working with the heart of a Levite/Shepherd versus a hireling.

A hireling is a wage worker or a hired servant whose sole concern is their compensation while a Levite is a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ who is called into full time service and therefore committed to serving others and caring for their place of employment as unto the Lord.

The characteristics of a Hireling are:

  • Steals from the company
  • Kills the vision
  • Destroys relationships
  • Does not take ownership
  • Protects themselves at the expense of the customer
  • Does not care about the well being of the customer
  • Serves by compulsion with a private agenda

The characteristics of a Levite are:

  • Honors the Lord
  • Knows their customer by name
  • Leads the Customer toward good things
  • Takes ownership of the company
  • Puts the customer needs before their own
  • Is an example
  • Serves willingly

Are you a hireling or a Levite? My prayer for you this week is that the Lord will help you to cultivate the heart of a Levite in your workplace for His glory and honor.

“Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.” Ephesians 6:5-9

“Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God; And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.” Colossians 3:22-24

3 R’s to Beat the Recession

I know the economists have said that we have “officially” come out of the recession. However, many people – especially the unemployed – are still experiencing recession-like symptoms in their lives.
Here are three critical characteristics to help you beat the recession, whether you’re employed, unemployed, self-employed, or misemployed.

  1. Resourceful: Use all you have in the most creative way you can in the circles of influence that you reach. You will have to work smart and harder than everyone else to win in this economy.
  2. Radical: Be willing to go against the grain to change your situation. If everyone else is going left, you might need to go right. If everyone else is zigging, you might need to zag. Leaders don’t follow the influence of crowds, they create influence that crowds want to follow.
  3. Resilient: Aside from a miracle – which is definitely possible – your situation is most likely not going to change over night. So dig your heels in and get ready to do whatever is necessary to win. Persevere. Persist. Just like a boxer, although they might take some punches that hurt, they keep fighting.

Create Your Personal Enterprise

In yesterday’s post I wrote about the growing trend of corporations hiring more “permatemps” versus full-time employees. Over the next decade as corporations increasingly move further in this direction, greater numbers of people will be engaged in entrepreneurial pursuits — by choice or circumstance.
It’s time for you to shift your focus on how you view yourself and your employment. YOU are a personal enterprise. YOU are a business owner. The business you own is YOU!
YOU, Inc. is the most valuable enterprise that you could work for. Your product/service is the unique and innovative combination of your talents, knowledge, experience, education, skills, ideas, creativity, relationships, networks, etc. Now is the time for you to start managing your career like a business owner, not just a “permatemp” at the mercy of companies’ quarterly earnings reports.
For some this equates to starting a business. For others this means approaching your job search (and performance) more entrepreneurially. Either way, it’s time to reformulate your expectations about your participation in the workforce — either as an entrepreneur or intrapreneur.
Many of you may be saying, “I have no idea how to create my YOU, Inc.” Fortunately, I’m here to help you. I’m passionate about moving people to thrive professionally, purposefully, and profitably.
Contact me today for some ideas on how you can create your personal enterprise.

You’re a Business Owner Whether You Know It Or Not

Have you heard the term “permatemp”? It describes people who seem to be caught in a never-ending cycle of temp jobs, unable to secure full-time status. As you may have noticed, even as the economy recovers from this recession, companies are still not hiring full-time workers. Many are using this permatemp approach to keep people in limbo as temporary workers, while not having to pay them full-time salaries or benefits.

Businessweek.com posted an enlightening article recently, “We’re All Business Owners Now“, documenting companies’ shift from “relying on full-time employees to a contingent workforce of temps, freelancers, contractors, and part-timers. Not just in low-skill jobs or easily outsourced tasks, either.

Even as the economy “recovers”, this trend is going to continue. So whether you’re currently employed, unemployed, or underemployed, you have to decide if you want to be another victim of corporations’ short-sighted, penny-pinching ways, where disposing of workers is even easier now than it used to be… or if you want to proactively position yourself as the owner of your “personal enterprise”.

Don’t wait to be a victim. You can use entrepreneurial strategies to find a more meaningful and profitable career path. I’ll talk about this more in my next post.

Paul Wilson, Jr.
