5 Keys to Keep L.A.S.E.R. Focus on Your Vision

As a leader I often hear people say that you need to have “laser focus” in order to accomplish anything significant. But other than needing to really concentrate your efforts on your objective, what else does “laser focus” mean?

Here are five practical tips for keeping L.A.S.E.R. focus on your vision, so you can accomplish the incredible dream God has put in your heart…

  1. Lock in on your core idea: Keep your passion pointed in a precise and positive direction. It’s easy to get distracted by the peripheral bells and whistles of your vision. Always remember why you’re doing what you’re doing. Don’t get preoccupied by what’s enticing yet not essential.
  2. Activate your imagination everyday: Sometimes it can be easy to become uninspired when we get stuck in the often less-than-glamorous daily routines of living out our vision. Do something everyday to keep your creative juices flowing so they don’t get stagnant and you don’t get stale.
  3. Stimulate others with your vision: If you can do it all by yourself it’s too small. B.I.G. dreams get heavy. Attract a good team of people to help you carry it.
  4. Eliminate doubt and doubters: Fear feeds futility, but faith fuels fabulous outcomes. Stay connected to God and with people who see the vision and can help keep your faith fueled.
  5. REST your body and mind regularly: Many days it doesn’t look like any progress is being made toward your vision. And if you’re not careful “dream fatigue” – stress – can set in when you are inordinately obsessed with trying to make it happen on your own (see Dangers of “Idol Dreams”). Periodically take time to relax, refresh, and renew. It’s a long journey. Remember huge skyscrapers are not built overnight, and neither are big visions.

Your vision is precious. Keeping the right kind of focus on it will allow you to achieve it in the right way with the right people at the right time.

Idol Dreams vs Idle Dreams – Part 2

“The greatest adversary of love to God is not his enemies but His gifts.” ~ John Piper, A Hunger for God

Dangers of “Idol Dreams”

Yesterday I wrote about the Detriments of Idle Dreams. Today I will discuss the dangers of idol dreams, which is when you begin to love the gift of the dream more than the Giver of the dream. Your devotion to your dream becomes idol worship when you take the focus off Him and put it on you.

This can easily happen when you develop an unhealthy appetite for ambition and accomplishment. The pursuit of  your ambitions overwhelms your desire to positively impact people’s lives. You focus all of your time, attention, and efforts on achieving your goals, and willingly compromising everything to get there. You forget that if God originated the dream, the outcome is for His ultimate purposes not yours.

Here are a few reminders to keep your dreams in perspective and understand that a truly fulfilling “dream life” is focused on pleasing Him…

  • If God was the originator of your dream, don’t take credit for something you weren’t responsible for. If God was NOT the originator, you shouldn’t be trying to do it.
  • If your dream is God-inspired, it’s all for His glory anyway – not yours.
  • Although God has placed the potential for greatness inside you, you will never reach it if you don’t depend on Him to empower and lead you.
  • Pride comes before a fall. God detests arrogance, but gives His grace to the humble.
  • If your dream is God-inspired, it will be thriving, transcendent, treasured, and transformational.
  • If your dream is you-inspired, even with the best intentions it will still be flawed, fallible, fleeting, and finite.
  • Let your desire for a significant life exceed your desire for a successful life.

Don’t allow the pursuit of your dream to become idol worship. To learn more about how to keep your dreams in the proper perspective, join me at the Dream B.I.G. in 3D Live! Workshop on Saturday, April 17 in Marietta, GA. Click here to learn more.

What do you think about this topic? Is it possible to be obsessed with your dreams to the point of idol worship?

Sweet dreams,
Paul Wilson, Jr.

Idol Dreams vs Idle Dreams – Part 1

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when dreams come true there is life and joy.” ~ Proverbs 13:12

I believe God gives us dreams to provide context for our past, put our present in perspective, and propel us forward with inspiration and insight into our future. Dreams have the power to move the hearts of people to accomplish great feats. On the other hand, they also have the power to consume a person when they don’t have a healthy perspective of their dreams and the role they are designed to play in their lives.

Detriments of Idle Dreams

One way that our dreams can become a detriment is if we are idle and do nothing with them. Often times the challenges of life can cause us to lose focus and interest in our dreams when we become overwhelmed with real and perceived urgent issues. And when a person begins to lose interest in their dreams, they begin to lose hope in their future.

Another thing that can happen is when a person is intimidated by the size of their dreams. They have an incredible vision, but they don’t immediately see the resources or means for getting it done, so they give up before they even begin. In essence, they don’t believe that it’s possible to bring their dreams into reality.

Here are a few reminders if you are tempted to sit on your assets and do nothing with your dreams…

  • The days of your life on this earth are numbered. Don’t procrastinate until tomorrow what you should be doing today, because tomorrow is the day that never arrives.
  • Don’t waste your time, talents, and treasures doing nothing with the dreams and desires that you have been given. God is expecting a return on His investment in you.
  • Your talents are a gift to be used to execute your dreams. Like a muscle, if you don’t use them they will atrophy and become ineffective.
  • Don’t allow the size of your dream to intimidate you. The pain of regret is greater than the pain of failure. Do something!
  • You don’t have to see the entire picture to begin to take action. Start where you are with the resources and relationships that you already have access to.
  • Trust God that if He gave you the vision, He will also give you the provision for making it happen.
  • Your God-inspired dream is bigger than you… it will launch someone else into their destiny.
  • It’s never too late to start dreaming again. It’s never too late to start living your dream.

One way that our dreams can become not only detrimental, but dangerous is if we develop idols out of our dreams, i.e. we begin to love the gift of the dream more than the Giver of the dream. I’ll discuss that in Part 2 tomorrow.

It’s unproductive and unprofitable to have either idle or idol dreams. To learn more about how I can help you activate your dreams and keep them in the proper perspective, join me at the Dream B.I.G. in 3D Live! Workshop on Saturday, April 17 in Marietta, GA. Click here to learn more.

What are you thoughts about this topic? What do you do to activate and accelerate your dreams so that they are not idle?

Sweet dreams,
Paul Wilson, Jr.

Get the B.I.G. Picture!

I purchased my first video camera earlier this year. Although I’m still an aspiring novice when it comes to videography, I’ve had a lot of fun learning the ins and outs of capturing inspiring moments on video. One elementary thing that I learned is that no matter how technologically advanced your camera is, if you are too close or too far away from your target, you will get a blurry picture. In order to bring the picture in proper focus, you have to adjust your distance and/or lens on the camera.

This is similar to the process of getting clarity for our lives. Clarity comes through understanding God’s B.I.G. (Bold, Innovative, God-Inspired) picture for us. What do I mean by that? Sometimes we make rash or impulsive decisions without having a good understanding of the short or long-term impact on other people and situations. Ask yourself the following questions:

Why am I alive?  What am I purposed to do? What is my vision of the future? Why do I do what I do? What goals have I developed for my life? Why did I choose those goals? What am I chasing and why? What will be my legacy?

If you can’t answer these questions confidently, I suggest you take some alone time with the One who created you and gave you purpose. Without God’s input, you can assume you’re making good decisions, but you could be missing some critical elements. His B.I.G. picture provides clarity for your direction and purpose in life by giving you a better perspective.

Dreaming B.I.G. in Miami!

Over Thanksgiving weekend I had a chance to go to Miami and spend a little time at one of my favorite places on earth – the beach. So of course I also had to bring my video camera along with me. I never want to miss an opportunity for insight and inspiration that I can share with others.

As I was standing on the beach looking at the water, I started thinking about how vast and incredible the ocean is. Although, the water was calm that day, I still recognized the extraordinary power that exists within it. However, I also thought about something that has infinite power beyond the ocean – the power of God. What’s incredible is that you have access to that power through Jesus Christ to do some amazing things with your life (Ephesians 3:20).

Check out my message below. I pray that it reminds you how amazing God is and the limitless resources you have access to in Him to dream B.I.G. and live B.I.G. Enjoy!
