Can Anything Good Come Out of Nazareth? by Patrice Tsague

And Nathanael said to him, ‘Can anything good come out of Nazareth?’ Philip said to him, ‘Come and see.'” ~ John 1:46

by Patrice Tsague

Where are you from?  What family were you born in?  Are people surprised by your accomplishments due to your family background, place of birth, race or nationality?  Have you limited your scope due to these factors?  Have you ever asked the question, “Can anything good come out of….?”

Nathanael asks this question about Jesus when Phillip introduces Him as the prophet from Nazareth,  Philip’s response is, “Come and see.”

Prior to the birth of Christ, Nazareth was not an important part of the national and religious life of Israel. It had a bad reputation in morals and religious life. Even the Galilean language had a crudeness to it. Due to these factors, Nathanael is surprised that the Messiah would come from Nazareth or be identified by it. God has an interesting sense of humor. He chooses to bring greatness out of a place or person who seems unlikely; the less likely the human possibilities, the more likely the divine possibility.

The Lord laid upon our hearts to relocate the Nehemiah Project headquarters to Portland, Oregon in 2010. As we contemplated the move, we asked, “Why Portland?” Even after we moved, many who live in Portland asked us the same question. They are asking, in other words, “If you could move anywhere else in the country, why would you choose a place so liberal, so un-churched, one of the least ethnically diverse in the country, and one of the most hit economically. Can anything good come out of Portland?”

The good news is good things can come out of anyplace where God is present and there is a righteous remnant who are committed to His will. I ask all who are curious about “Why Portland?” to take a visit and see a city where, despite its challenges, God is moving in a dynamic way in the marketplace. From weekly small groups, to networking events, to philanthropy, to social transformation, to equipping His people, God is at work in Portland. Prophetically, Portland will serve as one of the model cities of what God can do when people come together across denominational, political and ethnic lines to bring community transformation for His glory.

I come from a well-to-do family in Cameroon, Africa; however, because I was born in Africa, viewed as rebellious and very playful by my family, relocated to America at a young age, did not speak English at all, did not go to seminary or have an MBA, many thought, “Can anything good come out of that boy?”  My response is, “Wait and see.”

What has held you back? Whom have you allowed to define your destiny?  No matter your origin, race, education,  or circumstances, if you commit your works to the Lord and trust Him with your life and business, He will do more through you than you can hope or imagine.  If it does not happen on this side of glory, wait until you get to heaven.  You will be amazed.

So the next time you are asked, “Can anything good come out of…?”  Just respond, “Wait and see.” As you prepare to celebrate this Christmas season, remember where our Savior came from, remember what He did, and remember His words, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father”  (John 14:12).

Take Freelance Entrepreneurship to the Next Level

America’s economic landscape will probably never be the same. Consequently, the career landscape has also changed forever. And while the financial pundits spend their time talking about corporate profitability, we need fresh thinking for helping individuals and families enhance their personal profitability by redesigning their professional pursuits. Many career options that were prevalent before the recession will no longer exist in the future. People need to recognize that it’s time to adjust their traditional thinking as it relates to their career.

Of course this time of year is associated with temporary or seasonal work. We typically see this at retail stores and restaurants that have extended business hours with the anticipation of larger crowds of shoppers. Fortunately, for enterprising individuals the concept of temporary work doesn’t have to be confined to the holiday season. Recently Entrepreneur Magazine had an interesting article about this topic, “There a New ‘Preneur’ on the Block“. They introduce the term “tempreneur”, which is described as…

“The tempreneur is a new breed of worker; [they are] where the opportunities stick, depending on the day, the month, the quarter. As a tempreneur, you have to figure out what is going to serve you best. One month, [they] might shift more toward being a tempreneur, doing a series of projects because the opportunities are plentiful. The next month, [they] might shift more toward the entrepreneurial style, serving a long-term client in a more traditional manner.

It’s all about flexibility. They’re not by definition a freelancer or a consultant. They shift depending on what opportunities present themselves, and it’s that agility that makes them unique.”

In addition to my coaching programs, I faciliate two workshops that discuss this concept of being a “tempreneur” to build your career or business:

  • Repurpose Your Career: Strategies, ideas, and tools to restructure your career around your life purpose.
  • 3hrive 3.0: A faith-based career transition workshop, providing tools to transition from employee to entrepreneur.

This is not the time to be stubborn or stagnant with your approach to your employment. Instead, this is the time to be creative and imaginative in how you approach generating income. “Tempreneuring” is a great strategy for entrepreneurs and others who are trying to build their business year round, not just during the holiday season.

What about the idea of being a “tempreneur”?

3C’s are Key Ingredients for Your Dreams

Delicious deserts are a common sight around many homes this time of year. It’s just something about the Christmas season that causes people to want sweets. But not just any sweets. They want the special recipes that have been around for years, that help recall wonderful holiday memories. Even though those recipes may be generations old, the key to repeated confectionary success is using the same ingredients and baking process that have always worked.

It’s somewhat easy to find the right ingredients for a recipe to make a delectable delight. It’s not quite as simple to identify the key ingredients to realize your dreams. Clarity, conviction, and confidence are three of those key ingredients.

How do these ingredients work together? Clarity of purpose helps provide conviction that your dream should be done and confidence that it will get done. Without conviction and confidence there’s no real commitment to see it through to completion. Here’s a few other thoughts…

  • Clarity – Conflicting thoughts and perspectives create confusion. Clarity comes when you are able to streamline your thoughts by deflecting negative thoughts with positive ones. You will then be able to find a clear direction when making key decisions.
  • Conviction – Core values and beliefs become a decision making filter for your commitments. Solidifying your convictions positions you to stand firm when your challenges threaten to overwhelm your dreams.
  • Confidence – Bold, relentless “I will not lose” attitude in the face of adversity. Your confidence grows when you know you’re doing the right things for the right reasons.

Clarity, conviction, and confidence also allow you to be calm, cool, and collective as you pursue your dreams.

Your dreams are waiting to be realized. Just make sure you use God’s recipe to pursue your dreams, so you will have the right ingredients to produce a delicious outcome for your life.
