How Will You Change the World?

Today the world is mourning the loss of a giant in the technology industry, Steve Jobs. The innovations he inspired as the CEO of Apple changed the way people listened to music, watched videos, operated cell phones, and utilized computers. His impact reaches far outside the technology industry. His fans and foes alike have praised him with words such as “genius”, “visionary”, “legend”, and “iMortal”. The fingerprints of his legacy will be visible for decades to come (and maybe longer).

You may never get famous, invent an iconic device, or build a spectacular product. Regardless, you still have the opportunity and ability to have a spectacular impact and change somebody’s life with your love, skills, and ideas. Because the truth is when you die God is going to ask you what you did with the time, talents, money, relationships, and other assets that He entrusted to you. How will you answer Him?

What will you do to change the world?

G.I.V.E. Yourself Away the Right Way

The person who tries to preserve his life will lose it, but the person who loses his life for me will preserve it.” ~ Matthew 10:39

When we try to live only for our own pleasures, we are in a constant state of chasing after a state of fulfillment that we will never attain. However, when we give up our own pursuits and chase after the things God desires for us, we will find a life full of experiences that we never could have dreamed of.

Mohandas Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Unfortunately, though, people who do this with the wrong perspective, impure motives, or in an unhealthy manner end up damaging their own lives and the lives of those they are supposed to be serving. The foundation of service is love and if a person doesn’t love themselves first, they really don’t have the capacity to love others in a healthy way.

There is a way to serve others without hurting you or them in the process:

God-honoring – God cares more about your motives than your actions. Your desire for personal accolades and His expectation to get the credit don’t mix.

Intentional – Make sure who or what you’re investing your time, talents, and resources into is aligned with your purpose. Be strategic and focused so you and they can get the most out of what you’re doing.

Value-added – The best intentions don’t always relate to the best value. Quality counts over quantity.

Energizing – If you’re not excited by who or what you’re investing into, then either get excited or stop doing it. Otherwise, it’s a waste of your time. You can’t give yourself away begrudingly and expect anything significant to come from it.

The song in the video below is a great reminder of the joy of giving ourselves away the right way. Enjoy!

Live Passionately!

LIVE a Legacy, LEAVE a Legacy

It’s easy to go home again when your reputation is in tact. But when it’s not, that’s a whole different story.

I was recently invited to speak at a church in Dayton, Ohio, where my family hasn’t lived in almost 30 years. Amazingly, I received a “king’s welcome” when I returned. In the video below I share some of my thoughts as to why this happened…

Bricks, Wall, or Cathedral?

Seeing all the destruction of crumbled buildings in Haiti over the past week has many people asking the question, how do you rebuild the infrastructure?” A more important question is how do you rebuild a life?that seemingly is nothing but a pile rubble. For a building it’s a somewhat simple process to clear away broken concrete and twisted metal and start the construction process. It’s a lot more complicated to clear away an individual’s or nation’s mental and emotional debris and start again.

Here’s an interesting story…

A traveller comes upon three stonemasons. He asks each in turn: ‘What are you doing?’ The first answers, without hesitation, ‘I am cutting this stone.’ The second, who appears to be doing the identical job makes a gesture with his hand and says; ‘I am completing the wall.’ The third, again seems to be doing the same job slowly raises his eyes to the sky and says; ‘I am building a cathedral.’

When I think about various cathedrals around the world, I am impacted by their architectural beauty, ingenious design, amazing longevity, and spiritual significance. How does this relate to your life? A “cathedral life” is one that is faith-filled, flourishing, fruitful, fun, and fulfilled. Every life – no matter how broken, twisted, or flawed – has the potential to be a cathedral, even yours.

Your everyday experiences – good and bad – are like the bricks of your cathedral. Every brick has a purpose. As mundane or difficult or painful as they may seem, accumulated they serve a significant purpose in the grand scheme of your life.

Don’t get discouraged thinking that you’re just laying bricks. You’re building something spectacular!

Where Are Your Fingerprints?

With the explosive popularity of forensic-police-drama TV shows like CSI and NCIS, the public is more familiar with fingerprint technology than they probably ever would have been. In those shows – with the exception of the murder weapon – fingerprints of the perpetrators are usually the very first thing that crime scene investigators look for.

Fingerprints are a nearly invisible impression that says, “I was here.” The person is gone, but they have left traces of themselves behind.

Figuratively speaking, fingerprints also symbolize your legacy – evidence that represents what you did and the impact you had while you were at someplace. This could include a company, relationship, church, community, or life in general.

So where have you left your fingerprints? What evidence did you leave behind to show that you were guilty of doing something great? Can a case be built to show that your life positively impacted others?

As you think about your “legacy-in-process”, here are some questions to ask yourself about the evidence of your impact:

  • Will your current organization be better after you leave than before you arrived?
  • Will you leave your current relationships better than when you arrived?
  • How are you developing the people around you now to carry forth your vision?
  • Whom have you led in the past that is now leading well?
  • How are you equipping the people around you for their future success?
  • What are you building that people will be benefitting from 10 or 20 years from now?

Everyday is an opportunity to build evidence that your life matters because of your positive influence and impact. It shouldn’t take a forensic scientist to have to figure that out. Don’t miss your opportunity to be found guilty of doing something great in someone else’s life!

Pioneer Your Own Path!

Atlanta got hit with some snow last night and this morning. Since we typically only get snow about once per year, it’s cool (no pun intended) except for the icy road conditions that cause lots of accidents. And of course lots of people send in their snow pictures and videos to the local news channels. A few that have captured my attention are the ones of lonely sets of footprints where someone has just forged a new path in the snow.

Seeing these pictures reminds me of pioneers who blaze new paths versus those who just follow what others have already done. Pioneers lead when there is no obvious path to follow. Unfortunately most people wait for others to do the hard work and then complain when it doesn’t happen in their timing or according to their preferences.

Pioneers may not reap immediate rewards, but they do get the satisfaction of knowing they at least tried something no one has done before. If you never risk anything you never know what you are ultimately capable of accomplishing. It’s better to risk and fail than to never risk at all!

You have the talents, abilities, knowledge, and skills to do something spectacular. Are you just sitting around waiting to follow someone else’s path or are you blazing a path where none exists? Good things come to those who wait. Great things come to those who pioneer paths least traveled!

What paths are you pioneering in 2010? I would love to hear from you.

New Blogging Opportunity

I am very excited to share with you that I have been invited to be a guest blogger by Kenny Pugh at Chat Kafe. My posts will be featured on his blog on a weekly basis.

My first post is entitled “Super Legacy.” I assessed the two teams in the Super Bowl this weekend and how both were  greatly influenced by the retired head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bill Cowher, who left 2 years ago. I focus on the importance of leaders thinking long-term and building your legacy now, starting where you are today.

Read it here: http://chatkafe.blogspot.com/2009/01/super-legacy-by-paul-wilson-jr.html

I look forward to your feedback.
